Announcement: REBOL/Plugin Beta-1 Released!
[1/13] from: rebol1::covenantbg::com at: 12-Mar-2004 12:26
Hello everyone!
We are pleased to announce the Beta-1 release of REBOL/Plugin.
REBOL/Plugin is a plugin that allows you to host REBOL/View scripts
within the web browser. Using REBOL/Plugin, you can create REBOL scripts
that display View windows within the browser. With the Visual Interface
Dialect (VID), you can create high-quality user interfaces that utilize
the full power of REBOL.
This Beta-1 release adds new features requested by developers and fixes
many bugs, including:
* Browser DOM interaction - interact with other HTML elements on
the page via browser script.
* Automatic proxy detection and importing - your proxy settings
will be imported automatically, enabling the plugin to function
seamlessly in corporate environments.
* Windows 95/NT support.
To experience the plugin for yourself, go to:
http://www.rebol.net/plugin/tests/test.html
To view the developer's guide for the beta-1 release, go to:

If you have any questions, please reply to this list or join the
discussion on the rebol-view safeworld.
Thank you!

hanks for the updated version. Unfortunatelly it still does not work here.
I guess it is because our proxy requires NTLM authentication and REBOL
does not support that.

Hi, have a look at: http://www.htthost.com/ which will help you.
To RT: You should investigate this stuff, they have a SDK as well. This
might solve a lot of problems WRT proxies. Robert

Thanks for the updated version, it's working for me
just fine. I believe this is the one thing(IE Plug-in)that
can showcase Rebol/View to the WWW and get
people interested in it capabilities.
It would be nice to have AltMe in the web page. We
and non-Rebolers' could participate more often
through it.

Good idea, but I think the plugin's sandbox limitation would prevent AltMe
working as-is.

Is the plugin meant to update automatically? As it didn't for me.
Obviously uninstalling the alpha version and going to the above would
do the job, but is there an easier way?

close all browser instances (if you've tried
to run the plugin in this session) go to
%SYSTEM\Downloaded Program Files
and delete rebol /object plugin.
go back to the test page.
have noticed so far that the bgColor param
does not seem to work that well.

I was away for few days but was told by folks on AltME that Josh said
something like that in future all versions will be able to coexist, so
RT is looking into issue. Even docs state you should manually remove
alpha plug-in first ....
cheers,

Yeah - I'd noticed that. Just wondered if there was a one-click way to do it.
But, if "all versions will be able to coexist", then I guess the web-page objects will
say which version is needed and download it if it's not available. Which is good, as
it'll provide backwards compatibility and we won't need to update all our reblets with
every upgrade.
So, when this feature is working, the rebol.net test page should always be set to the
latest version, right, and so I wouldn't have had to ask my original question?

I had quite a few difficulties with getting the new plug-in. Even though \downloaded
program files\rebol/plugin object was reporting itself as version 0,1,0,0 .. it was behaving
like the alpha version even between cold reboots. And on the test page, the dll version
that came up reported was the alpha version from the 1st March.
Eventually I managed to fix it by copying the downloaded cab file to my website, pointing
the test page to my website,
{http://s94368865.onlinehome.us/downloads/rebolb1.cab#Version=0,1,0,0}
removing the old ( but current ! ) cab file, rebooting, and then reading the test page
...
whew!!

But it is pointing to the new version.
If you're having ISP ( viz paradise.net.nz ) caching problems, try this
http://www.rebol.net/plugin/tests/test.html?x
which fools the cache server into not showing the cached page.

This page is RT's test demo, but with the plugin coming from my site to help those with
caching problems

I had some caching issues, but flushing my internet cache seems to have done the
trick...
I think it had the old plugin within the brower's cache files. even removing it
from the disk, simply re-installed the old plugin!
also remember that if your rebol crashes, you must close all your explorers, or
it will not reload properly.
once I flushed the cache, It really started downloading again... instead of just
popping up the request in an instant...
HTH
This new version is much more stable...
thanks RT!!
