Newbie Mailing List Questions

 [1/7] from: stasil213::yahoo at: 18-Dec-2003 0:48

Greetings, I've been playing with Rebol for a few months now (I like it!!), but am new to this mailing list. I have a few questions. 1. Are mail list threads determined only by the subject? In other words, can I add my two cents to an existing topic just by typing in the correct subject? Or do I have to reply to an existing email? Does Re: matter in the subject? I.E. Would a new email w/ subject "Mailing List Questions" be in this thread? Would "Re: Newbie Mailing List Questions" be in this thread? "Re: Re: Newbie Mailing List Questions"? 2. I would like to combine my own "dictionary" code with suggestions made in the recent thread about dictionaries/hash tables. I am guessing the result will be a screen-full of code. I then would value input from people like you to help refine it further. Is this mailing list a good place to go back and forth on a screen-full of code? Are there other places? 3. Is there a wiki for Rebol? (Not the engine/source code, but a site I can visit?) Specifically, I am looking for a place to read about and post Rebol Idioms. For example, I saw some of Carl S's code that made an object, and within the object he did a set 'funcname func [] [... It would be interesting to learn more about this idiom (among others), and when it is helpful. Thanks in advance, and best regards, Stan Silver

I'm pretty sure it's just done on the text string. So you don't have to reply to a specific email.

Here works well. Also try out the Altme REBOL world (Get Altme from safeworlds.com and then visit the REBOL world as user guest, password guest). Once you have some code you are happy with, consider publishing it in the Script Library -- REBOL.org

Try Graham's Vanilla wiki: http://compkarori.com/vanilla Enjoy playing some more with REBOL, Sunanda.

And if you do try altme, then once in, click on the accounts group and post a message there asking for a username password. You'll need to supply an email and your name - just look at the earlier entries for what is required. Welcome to the list. Brett

Hi, Stan, Welcome to the list! Stan Silver wrote:

Take a look at the mail headers in your email client (e.g. in Netscape or Mozilla there's an option in the "View" menu to do this). If you reply to a previous email, the mail client should include the email ID of the onw you're replying to in the "References" header. I think that some email clients use this to construct the threading; If you don't reply, but simply type the same string into the "Subject" then it may not be picked up as belonging to the same thread. -jn-

This is a test of the thread mechanism. Stan Silver

Joel Neely, Brett Handly, and Sunanda, Thank you for replying to my questions. Here is a summary of what I learned: 1. This mailing list seems to make threads only from the subject string. In general, though, if you reply to a previous email, the mail client should include the email ID of the one you're replying to in the "References" header. So some (other) servers could construct threads using this information. 2. Try Graham's Vanilla wiki: http://compkarori.com/vanilla 3. This mailing list is a good place to get input on one screenful worth of code. 4. Also try out the Altme REBOL world (Get Altme from safeworlds.com and then visit the REBOL world as user guest, password guest). 5. Once you have some code you are happy with, consider publishing it in the Script Library -- REBOL.org Merry Christmas, Stan Silver

Hi Stan, On Tuesday, December 23, 2003, 12:49:12 AM, you wrote: SS> 1. This mailing list seems to make threads only from the subject string. It's mail client that have the feature, and they usually look for both email IDs and the subject. (But of course, this varies greatly from client to client.)
