hmmm... Kazaa or Morpheus

 [1/6] from: ptretter:charter at: 30-Oct-2001 16:18

I cant quite figure it out. I downloaded Morpheus (www.musiccity.com) awhile back. My daughter downloaded Kazaa (www.kazaa.com) afterwards. Anyway, it seems that they are VERY similiar. They have the same menu structure and interface as if someone made both or they are distributed under two different names. Additionally, they both create and dump into the same shared folder even though its in different directories (really strange). Anyone know more about this phenomenon? Paul Tretter

Morpheus and Kazaa are differnt clients to the same p2p library writtenn by fasttrack http://www.fasttrack.nu/ since the network is the same, you'll find Kazaa files on Morpheus and vice versa. Until recently, Fasttrack implemented a serverless protocol so that clients communicate directly with one another for both searching and downloading. They recently modified this architecture to be more like Napster or /Express (central server coordination required) presumably so they could disallow open source clients. I thought of another reason why this deal makes sense for Morpheus - they may be able to distance themselves from Fastrack by providing an alternative implementation of the network, probably written in REBOL. They would be in a lot of trouble if Fastrack settles with RIAA first, and somehow cripples their existing technology stack. John Sequeira http://www.pobox.com/~johnseq [johnseq--pobox--com]

... or eDonkey (http://www.edonkey2000.com), for which the servers seem to be gone for now... The real advantage with eDonkey is that it allows you to download any one file from a number of sources at the same time (= highest possible speed, high availability), and that it allows to start downloading from any of these sources even if they have not completed the download... Maybe this is possible with Morpheus too, but at least I could not find anything that confirms this.. /PeO

I think it is. I also noticed iMesh was doing that as well. I think it's now an expected feature.

hi I have read that kazaa has sypware or at least installs some when installed... but I am not speaking of personal experience... I cannot confirm or infirm this popular rumor... -MAx ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Tretter" <[ptretter--charter--net]> To: <[rebol-list--rebol--com]> Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2001 5:18 PM Subject: [REBOL] hmmm...
