Developer guide not a developer guide ...
[1/6] from: petr:krenzelok:trz:cz at: 16-Apr-2001 10:47
I looked into developer's guide and imo it is not much different of
beginner's guide. IF! we want ppl to hack view coding, we need kind of a
document which was available for View Beta and described events, face
objects, etc. New developers need to know how things work internally imo.
Will such document appear?

Agreed, as a newcomer to Rebol/View, I've been having a heck of a time
reverse-engineering a lot of what VID layouts do, to provide for the
unusual requirements of my project. It has been my impression that the
current documents are just temporary stand-ins, until something better
takes their place. My guess would be a new reference text, akin to the
Rebol/Core's users guide, which is released in both dead-tree and
electronic editions.

Yep, me too "I've been having a heck of a time reverse-engineering a
lot of what VID layouts do" or studying how Carl codes conference.r
(very useful). I'm learning a lot of tricks, but...
1. I miss a handy and exhaustive VID reference, really;
2. I miss a guide that helps me to build the right "/View context" in my mind.
Actually, I spend more time trying to find somewhere the complete
syntax of the various items than designing and coding my REBOL
applications. But I consider myself a positive man, so I keep myself
happy thinking about the near future, when we'll have a lot of guides
and we'll write code with REBOL in no time :-)
Obviously, if this "near future" could be next monday I'be happier...
oh, and the same day I would like to find /View for Mac (obviously at
least in five trendy colors) and /View/Runtime and /Apache and new
skins for /Express and... am I asking too much? :-)

Actually, possibly something akin to the popular Smalltalk Wikis would serve
the community, at least until this documentation is released. That way, we
can share what patterns of usage we have discovered for ourselves. The
difficult part would be figuring out what to use as an anchoring framework.

you don't have to "squeak" to get wiki.
there is one on rebol.org (wiki.r) already
in case you want to tinker or help document.
it is the guts of the quick-reference dictionary [qrd].
http://rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/wiki.r?wiki=bind
the QRD is not password protected at the moment.
feel free to modify it. I did over a year ago
and my mods are still there. (see comments for 'do )
we can add checkboxes in the QRD for
[]view []apache []command []runtime
pretty easily.
If you want to assist in fleshout of content and documenting
in other ways contact jeff about getting on rebolorg list.
your help -/will/- be appreciated ;)
