Novice Amiga Reboler needs help

 [1/13] from: ka2csh:earthlink at: 26-Feb-2003 0:40

Hello, I'm new on this list. I've got a few problems I need help with. 1) I'm having trouble when I start up Rebol. It doesn't seem to recognize the user.r info. Any ideas why? I ran set-user. Here the dialog: *REBOL/Core 2.5.0.1.1* *Copyright 1997-2001 REBOL Technologies* *REBOL is a Trademark of REBOL Technologies* *All rights reserved.* ** *loading...* *Component: "Internet Protocols" (22-Mar-2001/17:38:17)* *Finger protocol loaded* *Whois protocol loaded* *Daytime protocol loaded* *SMTP protocol loaded* *POP protocol loaded* *IMAP protocol loaded* *HTTP protocol loaded* *FTP protocol loaded* *NNTP protocol loaded* *Script: "REBOL Extended Definitions" (24-Jan-2000/2:53:35)* *Script: "User Preferences" (26-Feb-2003/0:22:12-6:00)* * /could not be evaluated.*/ *>>* 2) I'm at a loss as to why the example on page 276 in the Rebol for dummies does not seem to work for me. What's wrong here? Here's the dialog: *>> print read whois://[abooks--com--networksolutions--com*] *connecting to: networksolutions.com* *** Access Error: Cannot connect to networksolutions.com* *** Near: print read whois://[abooks--com--networksolutions--com*] *>>* 3) Rebol seems to crash on my Amiga. I've got strICQ & AmigAIM running. It does not seem to be a stable application. How can I nail down as to why it's crashing for me? Take a look at my tag line to see what I'm running. Would applying the unofficial FFS patch to OS3.9 + BB2 from Aminet help me out? To reply to this message, please remember that I've sent this e-mail to both the Rebol list and the AmigaOS39 list, so you might want to remove one of the lists from your response. ... Hi, Jay, Welcome to the REBOL list. I can't help with the two Amiga specific questions (#1 and #3). Regarding whois: Ralph's book, "REBOL for Dummies" is a great way to hit the ground running with REBOL. Unfortunately Network Solutions changed their whois interface soon after the book was released (if I recall correctly). I do not recall if they have a URL that works with the whois query. However, you will have more luck with the following: print read whois://[abooks--com--internic--net]/cgi/whois Hope that helps. --Scott Jones

Did you modify your user.r by hand at all? Have a look at it using a plain text editor and see if anything looks out of place. The user.r file should live in the same directory as the rebol.exe file (or core.exe, or whatever the amiga rebol executable file is called.) Check that it's there to start with. Show us the contents of the user.r, with your username and password munged. Can you get rebol to crash reliably? ie. after performing a certain action? Try with as few other programs running at the same time. Use this form to submit feedback on the crashes. http://www.rebol.com/feedback.html Anton.

I own an Amiga, but use it on a regular basis and I don't have REBOL on it so I can't help you with the Amiga specific questions, but you might try moving your user.r file (or delete it if you haven't personally changed it for some specific reason) REBOL with automatically rebuild the default user.r file. If you have attempted to change/add something to it, then you might post the part that you changed/added to the list here and we could better help you get it working properly.\ HTH Ammon Johnson CIO of Addept ---------- (www.addept.ws) 435.616.2322 ---------- (ammonATaddeptDOTws)

Hi Jay, It's been a while since I installed Core on my Amiga, but I seem to remember that I had to clean out all the tool-types' info from its icon to get it to work properly. I know it says "Don't delete this!" in the icon, but I did, and then it started to behave. :-) So, you could try that - after making a backup of the original of course. I use View mostly on Amiga, and find it very stable. Best of luck, Carl. On 26-Feb-03, Jay S. Siegel wrote:

No, not until after your posting did I add the POP3 server.
> Have a look at it using a plain text editor > and see if anything looks out of place.
Yes, and nothing seemed out of place.

Yes, that's where it is. The executable is called just plain "Rebol".
> Show us the contents of the user.r, > with your username and password munged.
My user name is in this e-mail in the header's From: line, so it's no secret. But, where does a password/passwords go in the user.r? Here it is (I manually changed the POP3 *none* to *mail.earthlink.net*, as shown below in bold): REBOL [ Title: "User Preferences" Date: 26-Feb-2003/0:22:12-6:00 ] set-net [ [ka2csh--earthlink--net] mail.earthlink.net *mail.earthlink.ne*t none none none ]
> Can you get rebol to crash reliably? ie. after > performing a certain action?
It seems to crash if I have the Amiga version of ICQ & AIM running. These are unofficial versions.
> Try with as few other programs running at > the same time.
I did. It doesn't crash if I don't have these above-mentioned programs running.

Hello Scott, Thanks for both of those whois:// syntax structures. They both work well. On 26-Feb-03, you wrote:

Hello Carl, On 27-Feb-03, you wrote: I didn't see anything in the tool types. For those non-Amigans, tool types are options that are stored as part of the Amiga icon's properties . Amiga icons are .info files, whereas the executable is the same name without the .info suffix. Thus, Rebol.info is the icon file associated with the Rebol executable, or, as us Amigans say, binaries. I do feel a little bit uncomfortable seeing that the latest version of Rebol, in its icon .info file, has a date in 2001 that is prior to the release of the latest version of the AmigaOS, version 3.9 + BB2 (Boing Bag 2), which was released in 2002. Boing Bags are Amiga, Inc.'s names for patches. This would mean to me that the Amiga version of Rebol has not been tested with the latest version of the OS. In fact, in the AmigaOS 3.9 mailing list on Yahoo groups, someone wrote me stating that Rebol Technologies supports up to version 3.1 of AmigaOS and doesn't support the 3.5 & 3.9 versions of AmigaOS. Bummer. :-( Another point is that version 4.0 of the AmigaOS is currently being developed. Will Rebol support AmigaOS 4.0? BTW, Carl, when you get that message in the .info files, chances are that you've got a virus. Do you run a virus checker in the background? If not, when was the last time that you scanned your files for viruses?

If you really want to store your email password in %user.r, you can add the following lines: system/schemes/pop/user: "username" system/schemes/pop/pass: "password" Then you can open a mailbox like so: mailbox: open [scheme: 'pop] If you don't include your email password in %user.r, it is simple enough to open the mailbox like so: mailbox: open [scheme: 'pop user: "username" pass: "password"] If you don't want your password stored anywhere, you could prompt for entry: mailbox: open [scheme: 'pop user: "username" pass: ask "Password? "]

I get this when launching from the icon, but not when running from the shell (which is where I usually run it from). Not quite sure what it is for, but setting a Rebol header in the tool type gets rid of it... Anyone? Tooltypes REBOL []

Afaik, the Amiga version is in sync with all official releases, though not Beta releases. I've been using Core and View occasionally on OS 3.5 albeit on WinUAE and without running the aforementioned apps. - Chris

The "Don't Delete This" in the Rebol icon is to protect the NewIcons data embedded in the standard Amiga icon. It is OK to delete it if you aren't using NewIcons IIRC. Bohdan "Bo" Lechnowsky Lechnowsky Technical Consulting At 03:30 AM 3/3/03 -0600, you wrote:

Ah - thanks Bo. Never realsed that. I thought it was something specifically to do with REBOL.

Which may mean you're using NewIcons - perhaps. They look like this, anyway... *** DON'T EDIT THE FOLLOWING LINES!! *** IM1=BAA!E=D0=D0=D0=D0=D0=D0=D0 ... IM1==B6F=AAL=A5=B9=D2 IM1==D3@=B2c&,8P=B2c&, ... plus lots more lines...

It may have something to do with it, though I suspect it's more likely a clash with your ICQ or some other program. I'm using AmigaOS 3.0 and find REBOL very stable.

Time (and probably a lot of it) will tell...

I have virus checking, but no, it's not a virus, as it's been there from the start. BTW, have you tried View yet, or only Core? All of Core is in View, but it has a GUI for installing, so may give you different results. Graphic will be very slow with it on Amiga though if you don't have a gfx-card. -- Carl Read

Thanks for this one! Yes, I was launching Rebol/Core from the icon, not from the shell. I added that in the Tooltypes and that solved the problem. Why is that and how did you come up with this solution? Kind Regards, Jay S.
