MS .Net pricing ...

Hi,
OSNews.com bring info about MS .Net pricing. Although I don't understand
it correctly, I think that prices are pretty high ...
---------
Microsoft is moving along with the deployment of .NET by announcing the
first details of what it will charge software developers to build
applications linked to its .Net My Services Web services plan. For
entry-level, small-scale applications, Microsoft will charge developers
$1,000 a year for access to .Net My Services and $250 per application
they create. For standard use, which Microsoft expects will involve the
majority of users, Microsoft will charge $10,000 per year for using .Net
My Services and $1,500 per application.

That's just a plain rip-off, charging $10k for something that really hasn't
even been proven any better than existing technology that's out there. I
installed the .NET framework and promptly removed it as my system got
violently ill.

Hosting a secure service is expensive - MS says they're barely covering
costs on .NET, and I don't doubt this.
For $100/mo you get 170 million passport users for your site who don't have
to go through a #@$% registration screen.
As much as I don't want to see their monopoly extended to web services, I
don't think it will fail because of pricing or their oh-so-sleepy
competitors (Magic Carpet and Liberty Alliance's less proven vapor-ware).
As Carl pointed out, trust/security is a more likely risk for them.

Hi John,

Excellent point. All we can hope is that the partnership Carl alluede to in
his interview will have some kind of plan for this type of thing. If it were
indeed a large provider of some kind, giving users access to REBOL services
would be a good thing and if developers could get micropayments, with the
provider handling the accounting details, you would see a ton of services
appear overnight (both a good and bad thing).
