fred - multiplayer flash game with rebol backend

 [1/2] from: zenzizi::hotmail::com at: 18-Nov-2001 14:35

hello! :) i'm writing a small post to ask if anyone is interested in giving a hand to a guy who has not much experience with ports. flash 5 offers an xmlsocket (which can be used without xml really) and i want to build a multiplayer pacman game with a rebol backend to keep the info going between the different players. i already managed to get the flash talking to rebol but that's all i can do.. playing with a web server source and other sources i managed a few lines of script but it seems i dunno what the flash and the rebol are exchanging exactly and how to manage connections etc.. traditionally i'm a database/web/script coder who has worked a lot with macromedia flash in the last two years, making a couple of games and i think the flash 5 socket is yet to be powerfully used! :) anyone interested contact me at [zenzizi--hotmail--com] or i'll be hanging on efnet #rebol (which is empty) or my icq is 9531515.. i can show you what i have done so far.. don't worry if you know nothing of flash it's simple. thanks a lot! :) frederic from montreal/quebec. p.s: i had asked if a french translation of the user guide was needed and carl told me he'd check but i never got any more news.. anyone?.. i guess he's quite busy with the x-internet and morpheus :) ----- frédéric dénommé programmeur internet «la route est plus large que longue» -penrose

Hi Frederic I too have little experience with Ports. But Yes I am very interested in learning for similar reason to you... I love Flash5, and agree the xmlsocket without XML garbage is likely to be powerful complement to REBOL. We are thinking along similar direction this far then :-) I tried to get the good folks on flashcoders interested in REBOL+Flash but zero fish yet! Do you know XML-RPC for REBOL: rebXR offers some other insights and alternatives.. nice. More likely for you interests, have you experiemented with rugby yet? <quote blurb on REBOL Force> Rugby - The REBOL request broker Rugby is a request broker completely written in Rebol. It does all things you can do with SOAP like technology, plus many more... You can use it to build Internet services in an afternoon, or write distributed applications such as file sharing, chatting, etc. Rugby will help you to do this in an extremely short timeframe </quote> Rugby is the REBOL toolkit for managing all your port i/o. One advatange is you can test adn develop in REBOL. Then add Flash so you won't wonder waht the fuck is wrong on two ends at the same time. There are since nice parallels between ActionScript arrays and REBOL blocks which may be very useful, especially if by-passing verbose XML. If you haven't already, maybe you should order a copy of Olivier Auvleot's new french language REBOL book: The first book to market covering REBOL/View French translation REBOL user guide + docs: YES good idea. Mutlilingual REBOL docs ni general would be wonderful. I am certain REBOL would be HUGE SUCCESS in Japan and Korea for example. Korea is so wired, and people are smart and quick to recognize cool new internet technology ideas and tools. The conciseness and style of REBOL seems to match well Asian sentence structure / philosophy.. China internet is growing very fast too. REBOL might be an valuable offset to nwe people-people internet design ideas adn applications there, and help them sensibly against over-centralization or over-zealous i-censors. I feel even that it sometimes matches the word order French a little more than English in some ways. Love to hear your thoughts on this. tell me more about your project.. ./Jason
