Where can I get documentation for the in-built functions of REBOL
[1/10] from: gunjan:ezeenet at: 11-Jan-2001 21:29
Hi Gurus, Where can I get more documentation for the in-built functions of REBOL, specially functions like parse-xml etc. These functions add a lot of power to Rebol but because of lack of information, newbies like me will always need a very co-operative maillist (like this one... Elan saved hours of my sleep with his URL-parser object and a pointer to net-util functions... thanks Elan) or tons of luck (so that I commit a spelling mistake while typing help and then discover something which I had been needing since ages... actually parse-xml was one such accident...). If there is any material or book or stuff that I can read that'll introduce me to all these then kindly inform. (And yes, I HAVE read the user manuals, both the html and the pdf ones and the user guide for REBOL/VIEW and some general websites and source codes available on the net) Gunjan ----------------------------------------- Gunjan Karun Technical Presales Consultant Zycus, Mumbai, India Tel: +91-22-8730591/8760625/8717251 Extension: 120 Fax: +91-22-8717251 URL: http://www.zycus.com

Well, this doesn't help you at all, but neither parse-xml or xml gets a mention in the indexes of "REBOL for Dummies" or "REBOL the Official Guide." (That said, everyone who's seriously into REBOL should get the Dummies book at least. Excellent for finding info about REBOL/Core in a hurry. (Usually. :) ) Maybe the REBOL XML words are not in a finished state yet? -- Carl Read [carl--cybercraft--co--nz]

Hi Carl, guess I'll have toot my own horn. REBOL - Official Guide, p. 688: The object net-utils also provides some other useful Net-oriented convenience functions, most notabley thr URL-Parser object, which includes the function parse-url. Perhaps it would be an idea to put together an inofficial Webpage that documents undocumented functions? It would be nice to have a Webpage that will accept email message, and if we could agree on a standard format (perhaps following REBOL's User Guide format) for emails describing the functions, and a REBOL script that generates such emails, then we could easily notify the Webpage of functions we happen to come across. Maybe Allen could host this page on his REBOLforces.com server (which is why cc'd this messsage to him personally). Any takers? Carl Read wrote:

I have written a script which will do this for you. Find information about it here... http://www.bebits.com/app/1226 or just download it here... http://www.beosjournal.com/rebol/News_Site_2.5.zip Set up a POP account, configure the %configuration.r file, and you're good to go. The %configuration.r file lets you specify specific reporters who can contribute to the page. -Ryan

This is one good option. There are a couple other options available now (or in the future for some of you): - Rebol.org has a wiki with REBOL functions where contributors can add their own information regarding the different functions. I just tried it out and it appears to be fully functional. http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/wiki.r - REBOL/Express (which will likely be opened up as a public beta before too long) has at least a couple different tools already built-in to help with organizing and delivering this type of information. * Reference.r is a lot like the above wiki.r where it allows information to be added directly to the relevant function's entry. * The Knowledge Base is a user-extensible expert system that can contain undocumented information, problem workarounds, general knowledge, technical support help, etc. The knowledge base can optionally be exported as a static web site mirror of the data available in the knowledge base. This may be done once the amount of data available in the knowledge base is sufficient to warrant this. At some point, I imagine someone will harvest information from all available sources into one central master resource. The good news is that there are at least a few options available out there. Now people just need to use them! -Bo On 11-Jan-2001/18:06:11-6:00, [RChristiansen--pop--isdfa--sei-it--com] wrote:

It's not public, I don't know if I can talk of it, and I don't know when it will be made public. Hi Gabriele, what's the point of having a non-public documentation of undocumented functions? Isn't something like having an expired credit card issued by a bank that doesn't exit? (Not quite, but I like the image ...) Anyway, if whoever has that documentation wants to make it public, cool. If not, then why should that prevent us from creating our own? Finally. It has been suspiciously quiet lately. So, when, when, when?

Isn't something like having an expired It not public because it is a beta product. As Bo said, it will be probably released soon (I was referring to Reference.r). Also, I didn't mean to stop you from doing it; but I know you (and the others) don't probably have all that free time to spend... :) Regards, Gabriele. -- Gabriele Santilli <[giesse--writeme--com]> - Amigan - REBOL programmer Amiga Group Italia sez.
