Only if you like examining the state of a program when it has crashed.;) core files are created when a Unix/Linux program crashes: the memory the program occupied is dumped to a file along with stack information and some other bits and pieces. An experienced bug hunter can use the core file to work out exactly what went wrong and why. It's pretty useless to most people though.
