Reading
a PostScript actually means executing it, and it is a
FORTH-like language so you'd need to write an interpreter for it
etc. (Not trivial if you want to support all the language
features...)
PDF does not require a full-blown PS interpreter, but it's not
trivial to parse in the general case (encryption, compression...),
and you'd have to support a lot of things to get to be able to
read most PDFs.
