In basic rule.. it must be unique and contain enough information to track it back to sender. I think you need to look up some RFC documents to see what actual requirements are. Those are available on may places in Web... Like http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/index.html This is one used so many years http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc822.html New version seems to be available.. http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2822.html This one has good explanation on chapter: 3.6.4.
