[REBOL] AltME REBOL3 world -- a new way to join
From: dhsunanda:g:mail at: 2-Jun-2010 16:43
Much of the discussion within the REBOL community happens on an AltME
world called REBOL3.
The REBOL community welcomes anyone to join the discussions on REBOL3.
But, up til now, that has not been that easy.
Today, we've added a new way to request membership. It is described here:
http://www.rebol.org/aga-join.r
***
To summarise:
Step 1: Download the client software from www.altme.com. The client is
a desktop application that allows you to view and send messages to Altme
worlds.
Step 2: Ask on the REBOL Gateway world
REBOL Gateway is an AltME world set up as a gateway to other REBOL
resources.
* Start the AltME client (that you just downloaded)
* go to the REBOL Gateway world:
- World: REBOL-gate
- Username: guest
- Password: guest
* Post a message in the REBOL3 Join Requests group. We'll need your
full name, preferred username, and a working email address (to send you
a password)
* Sit back and wait for a confirming email. To prevent spam, join
requests are checked by real humans, so please be patient; it may take
us a day or two to respond
* If you are new to AltME: while you are waiting, please play with
making posts in the playpen group. That'll give you a feel for how AltME
works
* Also, ask any questions in the Questions? group

Some background:
An AltME world is an instant messaging system whose client end runs on
your computer.
The REBOL3 world is hosted by REBOL Technologies, and is one of the main
discussion forums for the REBOL community.
About 50% of the conversations are archive publicly on the web, eg:
http://www.rebol.org/aga-groups-index.r?world=r3wp
The other 50% are visible to any member of the world.

It may sound a little odd having a world from which to request joining
another world. But there is some method behind the madness:
-- joining is now purely an AltME process
-- REBOL-gate acts not just as a gateway _to_ the REBOL community but as
a spam filter so bad join requests do not clutter up the forums
-- people's first experience of AltME may be more positive -- a small
world, rather than a many meg download

Any questions? Please ask here, or in the REBOL Gateway world's
Questions group.
See you on AltME!
