Buying the Book.......

 [1/2] from: ridley:dsl-only at: 29-Mar-2002 10:45

Howdy all...... I think I'm going to break down and buy a Rebol book but I have some concerns about 'freshness'. The 'Official Guide' was printed in 2000. How up-to-date is the book? how will core 2.6 differ from the book? Is there a new book on the way? What about view? Given the price of books these days, I consider this to be an investment and I would not want it to be out of date before I get it home. Your thoughts would be appreciated........

I have The "Official Guide", "REBOL for Dummies" and the "REBOL/Core v2.3 User Guide" - which is the one online on the rebol.com site. (Oh, and the first, little, "REBOL/Core Guides" book. Full of type-setting errors, but at least the REBOL words were listed in alphabetical order. Not that there were many words to list then, REBOL being only at 1.0.3.) My experience is that I open the "User Guide" first when needing info and only resort to the others when frustration sets in and I need a book with an index! (: How behind 2.6 it is I wouldn't know. The "Official Guide" is more a book to read from cover to cover than one to dip into in my opinion, while the Dummies book can be dipped into wherever you like.

Only covered in that French book as far as I know, though I believe there's an English version of it planned. How in-depth it is regarding View though, I wouldn't know.

Especially if bought air-mail from the other side of the world. (:

I doubt we'll hear of any new REBOL books until they're available. I would think a "real-soon-now" announcement would cause a sudden slump in the sales of the current ones.

Well, as I said, I use the User's Guide the most, (and I doubt I'd buy a 2.6 version unless it had an index!:), but we sure need a View User's Guide. (Then it'd be nice if a few small books on specific uses for REBOL started to appear. Ones on dialecting, CGI use and so on. There's only so much that can be covered in 700+ page books... That's the size of The Official Guide if you're looking for a good, long read.) -- Carl Read
