Hi all. I just sent an email to carl regarding a
project I would like to work on this quarter at ucsd.
I am posting the message here in case he misses it in
his inbox. Hopefully someone at rebol will see it. In
addition, I am would appreciate any feedback from the
rebol community.

Dear Carl,
I am an undergraduate student at UCSD studying
Cognitive Science. I am interested in using IOS
technology in an upper division course based upon a
principal called Contextual Design. In this course,
applications of cognitive science are explored,
emphasizing principles for designing effective systems
to support individuals, groups, and organizations.
Students work in project teams to design and evaluate
a prototype application or redesign an existing
system.
I would like to examine how communication and
interactivity can be improved in a classroom setting.
How can we improve student/teacher, student/student,
student/group, student/class and student/technology
relationships? In general, how can distributed
computing unify collaboration and communication in the
classroom and thus improve the quality of education in
a practical way?
My proposal is to customize IOS to work specifically
for our course in order to test the effectiveness of
the lightweight distributed computing that IOS
provides. We will have a team of approximately 7
people working on this project. Our test subjects will
be our entire class (approximately 80 people). By
customizing IOS, I mean to strip it of unnecessary
applications, modify existing applications, and create
simple reblets in areas where IOS is incomplete for
our purposes.
In order for this project to be feasible, we would
need a free copy of IOS (Express I believe) for use
till the end of the month of June (when the quarter
ends). We do have our own server to host IOS. In
addition, we would also like access to the developer
server where we can communicate with other IOS
developers for any potential questions we might ask. I
would like to make it clear that we will do our best
to be as invisible as possible to Rebol Technologies
as we do not wish to burden the company with our
little research project.
In return for providing us with this technology, we
will provide free research into a potential market for
IOS. It is also possible that Rebol may gain another
customer for their distributed technology ;)
Further information on our course can be found at the
website: http://hci.ucsd.edu/102c. A quick response is
necessary for this project to succeed as all our team
groups will be formed by the end of next week.
Thanks for your time and I hope to be in touch,
Rishi Oswal

Rishi, I read your email with interest.
I am in the process of getting funding for my next teching phase in a
little over a month where I
intend to use Rebol/IOS for the teacher-student administration and
content/courseware.
Of course, your goals sound noble, and I wish you the best with your
efforts, and
I think you are right on target to gather data in this area. May I
suggest getting
some grant monies from your university (professor) or a local private
sponser to just do an
outright purchase?
In the startup mode that I am in, I cannot fund you for your class which
is coming
soon, but maybe sometime in the future this would be possible. Anyway,
compared to
college tuition, Rebol/IOS is cheap.
Good luck and it sounds like you have a great idea for a project.
I would love to take that course!
