Embedded Linux
[1/10] from: ammonjohnson::yahoo at: 30-Nov-2001 10:43
Hi,
Has anyone tried running REBOL on Embedded Linux? I was just considering purchasing
the Sharp Zaurus that just got released (to developers only), but I would have to have
REBOL/View run on it to be worth it to me. ;-)
Thanks!!!

/Core should work, but I think /View will need to be ported. According to their literature
porting /View is just a recompile in order to get it to QT/Embeddix, a replacement for
X-server.

The contradiction so puzzling to the ordinary way
of thinking comes from the fact that we have to use
language to communicate our inner experience
which in its very nature transcends lingistics.

Just thought I would drop this note for any interested.
Carl has signed up as a developer for the Zaurus, & will likely be
porting View to QT/Embedix (The light weight x-server replacement) ;-)
Enjoy!!

Doesn't the Zaurus run AmigaDE?

REBOL would be a gigantic step up for the Zaurus SL5000, which I otherwise am
_very_ disappointed with. Then again, I'm a windows user, and do use REBOL on my
iPAQ, so perhaps I was expecting too much...

Could you share with us the reason you are disappointed with Zaurus,
please? btw: as we are talking Zaurus, AmigaDE, etc. issues - Amiga got
new board director:
Frank Wilde.
I had many choices on where I wanted to go next and where the best
opportunity for the future was. Bill McEwen and I had been speaking for
many months on business plans and other issues, and after meeting with
the team, and viewing the technology and their partners, there was no
better choice for me than joining Amiga
said Frank Wilde, Chairman of
Amiga, Inc.
I just hope Carl has some Rebol technology advances in his mind, as
business reblets are not something creating the wow/coolness factor :-)

I'd be happy to, either privately or on-list, but before doing so I should
qualify a couple of things:
(1) I am not much interested in Linux, although I am also not `anti-Linux' to
any appreciable degree. It's just that linux capability, in and of itself,
means nothing to me, unless it means I _can do_ something in my problem
domains.
(2) I have had an iPAQ for many months, and have REBOL as well as countless
other complex domains that work well on it. The SL-5000 is, as of this
point in time is real `Bush League' (no political pun implied) in
comparison.
(3) I tend not to have `toy' problems---I carry 3000->4000 appointments and
2,000 names in my phone lists. Some things that work well for tiny problems
really suck when the problems get scaled to this size or larger.
(4) Games mean nothing to me. I choose other forms of entertainment.
(5) The microphone/speaker on the iPAQ are lousy, but they are at least
_present_ as opposed to _absent_. I find that `voice notes' are quite
useful in real situations, and this just about wipes out, for me, the
SL-5000's advantage in having a tiny keyboard on-board.
I should also say, that I have had the SL-5000 for less than a week at the moment,
and am probably at least partially frustrated by things that are `almost the same'
as the iPAQ, but still different enough to make them hard (for me) to use.
I'd feel better waiting till I had a little more experience, so I could
be---perhaps---more fair. But I recognize your (and others) being interested in
`early' opinion as well, even if it is less well informed.
Let me know if you want followup. I'll probably be in a position to say a little
more after the weekend.

It's Zaurus, not Taurus.
Perhaps this will help:
The `Applications' screen shows:
Address Book; Calculator; Calendar; CityTime; Clock; EMail; FileManager;
Help Browser; Image Viewer; Media Player; Opera; System Info; Terminal;
Text Editor; Todo List
The `Games' screen shows 8 games
The 'Jeode' screen shows 2 demos
The 'Settings' screen shows 10 icons
So I don't think `money tracking' is part of this release, at least not that I've
found anywhere else.
And, we're not neighbors unless you have a _very_ broad definition of neighborhood,
as I live on the East Coast.

Yes, & no. The Zaurus runs Linux with QT/Embedix as the graphical server.
It also runs Personal Java. AmigaDE was rumored to run on it, but I haven't
seen any proof of it. If it does indeed run on it, it runs embeded in
Linux.
