[REBOL.org] Mailing list search

 [1/12] from: SunandaDH::aol::com at: 10-Feb-2005 6:49

New toy in the Library: http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/ml-search.r You can now search the whole of the Mailing list archive for specific words. The archive is a large chunk of the collective wisdom of the REBOL community, so it's helpful that it is sliced'n'diced in various ways (check out the other Indexes in the menu on the left)......it should now be possible to find more of the buried gems in there. Please let me know the problems with this search/ Thanks, Sunanda.

Looks good *and* is fast! One minor thing: REBOL.org -- Mailing List Archive: 41319 messages Search mailing list archive [Index status: messages indexed: 41318. Still to add to index: 0] The message counts do not agree. ;) Regards, Ashley

This is brilliant, Sunanda. Now let me suggest that you add a <meta robots="rix" noindex> tag (approx. syntax from memory) to the ML pages so that a mailing list search will be something else than a rix search. I already was thinking about excluding the ML pages from the rix, since most hits one gets from the rix now are ML hits... I'll put a link up on the rix home page, if that's ok. I don't like to add to the list with just a "That's excellent news!", except in special circumstances, of which this is one, so... That's excellent news!" ;-) -- Carl Read.

Thanks. I think that's fixed now. (It comes from having to do some tricky arithmetic because the fields have inconsistent names and usages. If you subtract next-message-no-to-use from last-message-number-indexed, the result needs adjusting). Hallvard:

Thanks too. The ml-display-message.r and ml-display-thread.r pages now have this meta tag: <meta name="rix" content="nofollow"> Other pages from the Mailing list section of the site (such as the various indexes) do not. Sunanda

Uhm. I was rather thinking about _noindex_. If you do a RIX search for "Gregg", the ML represents most of the 2379 hits. I just tried, and only at the 35th hit did I find something that was not from the rebol ML (both rebol.org and rebol.net hits). I therefore think that excluding the ML from RIX would give the RIX a more "own" kind of hits. nofollow is just fine, but "noindex" would be even better (both is OK by me).

Fine! Thanks, Hallvard PS. I found this on a ml-display-message.r page: <script type="text/javascript"> </script> (Just before the RIX meta tag). Guess that's some kind of leftover? PPS. Correction: I found a non-ML hit on Gregg as no 4. But still, two hits out of 40 is a low % rate...

Oh, and by the way: I think that should be "RixBot", like in the UA string and in robots.txt etc. Sorry, that was my fault. I was just too quick on the keyboard... HY Dixit [SunandaDH--aol--com] (11.49 11.02.2005):

No problem. Give me a day or so to get round to it.

No, it's deliberate. It's an anti-FOUC hack, believe it or not. But it doesn't seem to work with Firefox, Sunanda

Never heard about FOUC. Did a google search (http://www.google.no/search?q=anti-FOUC+hack) and got this single result: http://www.blog-and-blues.org/weblog/2004/11/02/330-fouc-si-vous-avez-du-temps-a-perdre OK. I don't really mind a FOUC, but at least I see now that the <script> tag is deliberate, and I understand why it is there. Good night, Hallvard
