Diversion

 [1/18] from: tbrownell::shaw::ca at: 4-Mar-2002 0:02

I've noticed that the weekend postings to this board seem to drop by at least 90%. Is that a sign that Rebol is a workplace diversion? TB

Hello, I'd say it's more indicative that people actually have real lives away from computers and why waste precious free time at the weekend writing and talking about ANY computer language when there's a million more exciting things to be doing. If you can't think of more exciting things than REBOl at weekends then you should get outside more. That said i don't always heed my own advice - I often think about computer related subjects whilst dog walking at weekends ;-) cheers, Mark Dickson In a message dated Mon, 4 Mar 2002 7:05:10 AM Eastern Standard Time, Terry Brownell <[tbrownell--shaw--ca]> writes:

Hi At last, I am not alone in my loneliness ! Even Ladislav's Website seems to be down (http://www.sweb.cz/LMecir/). By the way, I would like to know more about bind and use. If anyone has examples, explanations, even raw material ? Joel, Ladislav, Gregg, Carl, Romano, Gabrielle, Andrew, Brett, Alan, Maarten, Petr, Allen, Robert, Sunanda, Jason ? Patrick

Hi Pat, I'm here. About binding, ask and i'll try to answer, for what I know. I've found Ladislav's site always down in the last weeks. Ladislav: you should find another web server: at least for HTML pages there are plenty of fast free services. --- Ciao Romano

Hi Pat, strange, it is accessible for me, don't know what's up? Cheers Ladislav <<Pat>> Hi At last, I am not alone in my loneliness ! Hi Ladislav, It is still invisible to me. I will try again at home . However it would be cool to have your work available at RebolForce, wouldn't it ? Patrick

Thanks Romano I will certainly ask for help about binding. I have avoided the subject for a while because I found it too difficult. I was hoping that I was ready now. Unfortunately, as I was re reading some Ladislav stuff this weekend, I discovered some code I do not quite understand. Patrick

I've never had any trouble getting to Ladislav's site. Are some people still behind Cold War firewalls!? Sunanda.

Or, alternatively, why work when you could be talking about computer languages in your employer's time, eh? (; -- Carl Read

Computers for most people are a work tool, some use it for a hobby (no money in hobbies). That would be one reason for less posts on a weekend. In my case wife would kill me if I spent the weekend looking at a computer screen. :-) Regards, Greg

Here's a starter, with mild apologies for the length: http://www.escribe.com/internet/rebol/m19482.html This was from a previous discussion, but note the parts about each REBOL word belonging to a context and FUNC changing contexts of words. You can have words with the same "name", but which are different words because they belong to different contexts. (Think of the fact that "George" is a different person, depending on whether you're in the Clooney house, the White House, or the Jungle.) Now consider this transcript:
>> fee: "phi" == "phi" >> fie: "phei" == "phei" >> foe: "pho" == "pho" >> fum: [fee fie foe] == [fee fie foe] >> print fum -> phi phei pho
FUM contains three words, which belong to the global context.
>> some-object: make object! [
[ fee: $25.00 [ fie: "shame" [ foe: "opponent" [ tunnel: func [b [block!]] [bind b 'self] [ ] SOME-OBJECT also has three words with those same names, but they are in a different context, so...
>> print fum
phi phei pho ...FUM still refers to the original (global) three words. Now let's tunnel into the context of SOME-OBJECT...
>> some-object/tunnel fum == [fee fie foe]
FUM still refers to three words with the same names, but now they live in a different house...
>> print fum -> $25.00 shame opponent
but
>> print [fee fie foe] -> phi phei pho
So that bind foo 'baz (where FOO is a block of words) says "for each word reference in FOO, if there is a synonym for that word in the context that contains 'BAZ, make that reference in FOO be to the synonym in 'BAZ 's context." HTH! -jn- -- ; sub REBOL {}; sub head ($) {@_[0]} REBOL [] # despam: func [e] [replace replace/all e ":" "." "#" "@"] ; sub despam {my ($e) = @_; $e =~ tr/:#/.@/; return "\n$e"} print head reverse despam "moc:xedef#yleen:leoj" ;

Thanks, Chris I really do not know why some cannot open my site, maybe I should consider the option to mirror it at Rebol Forces. (Allen, how about that idea?) Heh. I like your interpretation of it. I'm usually not home at all on weekends, so I'm kind of thankful for the drop-off - as it is I get too much mail ;) --Charles

It's all relative. Some actually find 'dog walking' exciting, and others, like my ex Hong Kongian (?) landlords, dog eating. Frankly I find it all a bit vain. TB
