core pro?

 [1/6] from: tofo:695online at: 16-Apr-2003 7:04

hey guys, I sure wish that the free versions of rebol were not crippled. I know that's a worn out subject, so I'll try to leave it alone. I can safely ask, though, if there is a way to use my view/pro from the console. I get "rebol cannot connect to x-server" as a error. Is there a way to turn off view functionality? Thanks. -- signature to baby: "doobywoobybooboo" -tom

Hi Tom, TF> I can safely ask, though, if there is a way to use my view/pro from TF> the console. I get "rebol cannot connect to x-server" as a error. Is TF> there a way to turn off view functionality? Not AFAIK. I think you need to use Command for environments where X isn't available on the server. Under Windows, or where X is available, you should be fine. -- Gregg

Heh, I am sorry for my word choice. Really, I'm a big fan of rebol. But, you guys tell me, do the free versions not have some important functionality turned off? Unless I'm really off in fantasy land, people do sort of take system access for granted in a language. Why is it such a big deal? see ya, -tom

Hi Tom: 1)I chose to use rebol/core as the venue for an "programming 101" course for Middle Schoolers because it *doesn't* have system calls. 2)It is perhaps attractive to some ISPs to have CGI scripts hosted that *don't* allow system calls. 3)I've gotten used to doing without. If I do need to make system calls, I use python.... Of the two largest projects that I use rebol/core for the main programming venue, I only use Python on one occasion to do a set of system calls... 4)It may even be a 'teaser' on the part of RT's business plan to release 'core without system calls. If so, I wouldn't argue with that practice.... it's their right, with /core, they've given me an awesome tool as it is. Yeh, it would be nice though..... -tim-
