vid 1.3

 [1/6] from: maarten::vrijheid::net at: 22-Aug-2003 14:42

All, I just tried a lot of the code on the developer server of the vid project and although there hasn't been activity in six months most of the stuff there is a big step forward. Can I try to bundle it as an intermediate GUI lib for the rest of us right now? --Maarten

Hi, I hope I can share few info for you ... I talked to Carl few days ago and he told me, that RT priority list was/is - 1) Finish Command SDK - done 2) move servers - done 3) finishing OSX View version - pending other things which should come: - View kernel upgrade - direct draw modes - I also asked about browser plug-ins, as they were mentioned in amiga.org interview and Carl told me, that they are also high on priority list. The idea is to first have plug-ins using its own windows, followed by plug-ins which will be able to draw inside browser window - Carl also mentioned VID in that regard and that is why I mentioned it. The idas is have rebol web-forms in browser. I can tell you that as for me, I think it will be a killer app ... IOS Developer server stuff is imo owned by their respective authors, so you would have to ask them. What I would like to see in following VID: - simplified list as Carl did - check-line etc. Carl did - Menu, context menu - Cyphre - tab-view - Cyphre - tree-view - Cyphre - list-view (grid) - Cyphre for Robert ... Robert would have to allow it being incorporated into View .. :-) - focus system - Romano (Romano also did excelent auto-resize system, but not all developers agreed to have it as a part of VID) Well, I can only agree with Maarten though - those that used that styles can't work without them anymore - they are so usefull! Maybe we could get word from Carl upon the issues, as maybe RT's planned VID update is not far-away? I don't know ... -pekr-

So.... Carl? Cyphre? Romano? Gregg? Robert? ...? Let's move this forward. VID hasn't seen improvements too long now.

Thanks for the support,

Hi Maarten, Petr and all, I wanted to make such pre VID 1.3 styles pack and offered this few months ago but didn't get any response from anyone on the List...then I became busy in my job... As I stated before: - those developers who have access on IOS Developer server can use, test (and report bugs :-) ) those pre-VID1.3 styles I did - Rebolers who don't have access can write me directly to obtain those styles for testing too(but current versions are without any docs only with few examples) I don't want to do any wide public bundle for now though I'm planning to do it at the end of October so more patient people will get: - styles-pack with more robust and bug-free styles which Petr mentioned below -docs -examples -few additional new styles(surprise) regards, Cyphre

Hi Maarten, I don't think I contributed much, but anything I did you can use. -- Gregg

Hi, ok, here is my (longer) answer: I hired Cyphre to develop some styles and dialects on a contract base. Together we developed a data-form dialect that makes live very easy WRT simple database related Reblet programming. Further we have designed some VID styles especially advanced list-style. BTW: Cyphre did/does a very good job on this. As my Reblets are IOS related a simple to use data-sync dialect was developed as well. I plan to continue working on this approach and extend it to optimize my Reblet development approach. I further plan to enhance IOS with a lot of other nice Reblets. Anyway, I'm open to contribute those things done so far to the community in a controled way. As I said more than once, I think fragmentation is our biggest problem. We have a lot of pieces but not one thing to concentrate on. That's OK for a lot of you, but I'm concentrating to create a base, where I (and others) can make a business from. My interest is to keep this development process under control. The easiest thing to achieve this is to pay people. Well, up to some level I can do this, and I'm doing it. I know that I could be faster with help from more people. I have a goal and a vision where to go to with Rebol's technology and how to make a business out of it. My idea is, to find futher people that share this goal/vision (or at least can accept to follow in this direction) that want to contribute to this base. In return everyone participating and contributing can use the results as they like. I have no interest in a never ending community process WRT the stuff I need. It's just to time consuming. Don't take me wrong here: I highly appreciate the community and what is done so far. Very good stuff! But to make a business I need to focus on things. If you want, ask Cyphre about the way we work together. IMO this is a very good and open way to do it. He is superb in Rebol development, I think, that I have a good feeling what is needed and how it should be used later. Doing a little brainstorming together with Cyphre we find a solution that really cute within a very short time. That's the way I would like to work together with a few more people. I don't have a problem to pay for the stuff I need. It than will take longer but at the end of the day I'm sure I have a good base for Rebol business. This base can be used by others as well to make a business from it. I don't care much about licensing etc. because this makes live much to complicated. If you can make a fortune out of it, well do it. What I care about is to keep the development on track and on goal. That's what my interst is because I think, if someone is controling this all the others will profit as well. If you can live with some rules and want to contribute let me know. Robert
