42 (Was Rebol Unity ??)

 [1/10] from: tbrownell::shaw::ca at: 21-Mar-2002 3:53

There is no way Rebol will compete with Flash... no, never, ain't gonna happen. There is a fundamental issue here that needs to be addressed before anything happens... 42. Just checking news.php.net... over 400,000 postings. tb

Another indicator... when was the last time you saw a newbie ask a question on this list? Need to do something to reach out, something either drastic or revolutionary. TB

I was about to when I signed up, but then the answer became painfully obvious :) I see some newbie posts time to time. Also posts which *kind* of relate to REBOL, but aren't always just REBOL related (such as the CGI setup, and webhosts who do REBOL). --Charles

BTW, what is this "42 indicator" all about? I'm aware of 42 being the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything, but... (funny note: my cell phone number happens to be 4284. Totally randomly assigned.) --Charles

People would have to hear about REBOL before they'd check it out, but it doesn't make the news often. On the rebol.com's website news page the most recent item is dated 31-Oct-2001. There's newer stuff on the front page, but even so, it doesn't give the impression as if much is happening. And that news page is what tops a Google search for "rebol news". Hmmm. Links in REBOL scripts are gonna be ignored by the likes of Google, so we'll need to use webpages to make our presence felt in search engines - popular scripts won't do it. -- Carl Read

42 happened to be the total number of pages in a google search using the phrase "rebol tutorial".. and has come to represent the lack of .r community(relative). As a funny twist of fate, I have a dictionary DB with and ID auto_increment.. and guess what ID 42 was??... Author/Creator... true, totally random :) TB

Its a Douglas Adams joke.. somehow I never got into his work, so I've been wondering also for the past couple of days. Anyway I just did a check via google and found this: http://www.zootle.net/afda/mfaq.shtml#sect10 <quote> What do you get if you multiply six by nine? (and other notes on 42) Well, 54, of course. It can be argued that in base 13 you get 42. Those of us who have followed this group for some time have seen the revelations of those who have newly discovered this. (Some of us have even been there ourselves.) It's an extremely tired discussion, though. The joke, when Douglas wrote it, was simply that it was the wrong question for the answer (or the wrong answer for the question, if you prefer.) He has said himself "Nobody writes jokes in base 13." 42 is just a number. It has no significance in relation to any other previous uses of the number 42, as least as far as DNA always insisted. </quote> Perhaps Hitchhiker rebolutionaries can enlighten us further.. thanks ./Jason

42 is the answer the mega computer DEEP-THOUGHT in the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy gave as the answer to the question "What is" the meaning of life, the universe and everything, after several millenia pondering the problem. The answer was unsatisfactory in as much as it was concise but not very revealing as to the "WHY" cheers, MD In a message dated Fri, 22 Mar 2002 10:25:01 AM Eastern Standard Time, "Jason Cunliffe" <[jason--cunliffe--verizon--net]> writes:

Heh. Yeah, I know. Hence my "answer to Life, the Universe and Everything". The problem is: What's the question? ;)

Zootie? Hey, B5 fans out there? "Zootie! Zoot zoot!"

Well, as the ultimate computer in the universe figured out, 42 is the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything. The people who created the ultimate computer (okay, okay, the /mice/ who commissioned it...) were baffled, and were told something like, "Maybe you should figure out what the question is, first."

Of course, Adams was also a perpetual joker. Take everything he says with a grain of salt, that sort of thing.
