Proof of Concept: Messages
[1/6] from: ryan:christiansen:intellisol at: 25-Apr-2001 11:54
OK, people. I have labored long and hard to make Messages a slim,
full-featured script for running a news site with discussion forums and
classified ads. It is now the official engine of Fargo News at
http://www.fargonews.com
As you will see, the news headlines, discussion forums, and the classified
ads all have different cascading stylesheets governing how messages are
displayed, making them all look different enough so that you would not know
they are being saved, retrieved, and displayed using the same engine.
As you can tell, I'm pretty proud of this work. I have literally been
working on this for nearly two years. Having no previous programming
experience beyond AppleSoft BASIC prior to picking up REBOL, I feel I have
accomplished quite a bit. Thanks to everyone who has helped me along the
way. I now have a product I feel I can market to small news operations.

Sounds very cool, Ryan. I tried to take a look but here's what I get
when I click your link from Netscape:
************
Not Found
The requested URL /css_stylesheets/stylesheet_01.css was not found
on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to
use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Thanks for the tip. I removed the link to the stylesheet (didn't use it
anyway) and checked it in Netscape 6. Looks okay now.

Hi Ryan
Good show. News page seems to work fine with IE5.01 SP2.

Well done, it seems to work very well for me.
Might I suggest a minor improvement? (You've probably
already thought of it, though).
List the number of comments posted for each news item
next to the link "LIST/VIEW COMMENTS".
(Also - I hate white backgrounds for reading -
so if you want me to read your site, it has to
be at least configurable.)
Sorry to be negative there. (Same goes for the view text editor).
:)

Except on all the three Amiga browsers, (IBrowse, AWeb and Voyager),
which don't, umm, have CSS yet. (: (Unless the latest versions of
AWeb and Voyager do. Not sure...)
Otherwise Ryan, the site seemed to work well on the above three. I
tested searching and posting and both behaved as I'd expect them to.
Posts didn't seem to be sticking though, in that while the one I made
appeared amongst the messages as expected, it wasn't there when I
looked at the site with another browser, plus someone else's
dissapeared between browsers as well. Is this meant to be happening
while you're just testing it? (Alternative posibility - I hadn't
entered my email address, but should have?)
