can't connect to AltME ....

 [1/9] from: petr::krenzelok::trz::cz at: 11-Jan-2004 18:57

Hi, last two days I am not able to connect to AltME properly. It worked yesterday in the evening, but is not working whole day today once again. Anyone else got problems connecting to AltME? thanks, -pekr-<

You are not alone. This is a me-too post! Exactly the same problem. Also, it seems that altme.com and safeworlds.com websites are down. I assume Altme has to do a request to altme.com to get the IP address of the world. Thereafter (unless the IP address is dynamic), a session should work without further reference to altme.com. This (assuming my analysis is right) introduces a single point of failure, with a couple of (immediately off the top of my head) approaches to alleviating it: -- Altme could have mirror servers, and look the world-name up on those -- If altme.com (and mirrors) aren't available, the start up could try the last-used IP address. Altme is so useful, that it is really annoying when it doesn't work. I shouldn't really complain though: it's free (at least the way I use it) so I'm certainly getting value for money, Sunanda.<

Re: can't connect to AltME .... I think EVERYONE has problem to connect ;-) ALTME use SafeWorld site/server to locale worlds. Their web server seems down so I think that the "world locator server" too :(( Wait for tomorow ! DideC

Same here. Ping of www.altme.com shows a 100% loss. Problem with the server it seems. :-? Petr Krenzelok wrote:

Well, I was surprised of one thing - I looked at AltME rebol-view config, and it actually contains IP adress, not a name! I checked agains DNS setting using nslookup and IP was the same. So I wonder what is going on? Simply their servers are down or they have problems with DNS entries and it would not be for the first time IIRC, but maybe I remember it incorrectly and it was RT who had problems with DNS some not so long time ago? -pekr-

Hi all, A little off topic: Is anyone else having problems w/ the Alt-ME server ? Our hosted world is down, and we cannot see the REBOL world as well -- otherwise our internet connectivity is fine ... Thanks, Mike Michael Mastroianni President, Fluent Energy [mmastroianni--fluentenergy--com]

yes, it was down over the weekend and is down again this morning it would be very nice if altme clients had a fallback mechinism to find worlds (last connected, any previous, hand specified ...) so altme.com was not a single point of failure it is now. it is definatly eroding trust. I have just convinced a bunch of relatives to migrate from MSN and they are feeling skeptical... On Thu, 15 Jan 2004, Michael J. Mastroianni wrote:

One other note about when altme.com starts resolving worlds again. You may still have to restart your worlds for them to be usable (which is a pain for those who are not anywhere near the machines the world runs on) On Thu, 15 Jan 2004, Michael J. Mastroianni wrote:
