help please simple view problem part 2

please help. need connect button to take ftp url -inc user+pass- and connect to it, then and refresh + display top level dir in the file list. i suspect i need the whole feel: aspect of view but cannot get me head around it :o( once i got this sorted i can make it look pretty and get stuck [i mean to work] on new things. i would like the simplist possible solution please - ideally with some comments to help me understand what is going on so i can learn.
