[ANN] [REBOL.org] [ML] Indexing the Mailing List

 [1/8] from: greggirwin:mindspring at: 14-May-2004 10:55

Hi All, Just recently Sunanda posted his message about tagging the ML index at REBOL.org. In the short time since, the tag team (Peter Wood, Christian Ensel, and Sunanda -- did I miss anyone?) have pushed the number of tagged threads over the 1,200 mark! It's not only amazing, it's helpful to all of us, so I would like to publicly thank them for their incredible efforts so far. THANKS TAG TEAM! Two things I can think of that will show them we appreciate their efforts are: 1) Use the ML index at REBOL.org and provide some feedback about what you like, and what you don't. This will show that it's being used and that their efforts are not in vain. 2) Read Sunanda's message again and see how tags work; then use them here when you post messages. Taking an extra minute to come up with appropriate tags means the tag team won't constantly be playing catch-up with the list; they'll be able to focus on adding real value by identifying popular threads and such. (of course, joining the tag team would be another way to help :) Thanks again to the tag team, and thanks to Max who I think was the one that pushed us to start using tags here some time back. -- Gregg

hmm.. Please can you post the TAG guidelines message again here now. And also to help us all, I suggest put those same TAG instructions clearly posted around the rebol.org web site. I did not see them on either of these two pages for example: http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/boiler.r?display=ml-tag-team-help.html http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/ml-topic-index.r Thanks again ---Jason

There aren't any guidelines as such. Other than something like: be clear, be simple, don't use too many. Better guidelines will emerge as part of the tagging exercise. We don't really know how to best label something until we've played around with the existing archive. For example, a thread discussing a bug in Object! could be tagged as [data structures//object!//bug] or [object!] [bugs] or any one of a dozen other ways. The best ways will emerge. Meanwhile, I wouldn't expect anyone posting here to have to (or even want to) work out where their message belongs in the tag team ontology before posting. So, yes please, make an effort to tag new threads if possible. But don't worry about it. The tag team will tidy up any tags once the full drift of the thread becomes clear. Sunanda.

Hi, I think this is a tremendous work and I'm thinking if your resources shouldn't be used for other things. Some time ago I posted a request about Bayes filters etc. IMO it should be possible to use those 1200 taged messages as the base to train a bayes filter and than have it categroize the rest of the messages. What do you think? Robert

I think the tagging would be an excellent way of training a Bayes network. Whether it could tag as well as a human -- well you prove it, and we'll be begging to use your network to tag new threads. (Personally, as a DMOZ editor, I believe that "humans to it better". But I'm happy to be proved wrong) Feel free to use the ML archives and their tags as a training data set. You can download the ML archive (one message at a time!) using the Library Data Services Interface: http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/documentation.r?script=lds-local.r The LDS request 'get-rml-message will return the current tags for the thread (field is 'topic-list -- not currently mentioned in the documentation) Sunanda.

Robert A very interesting suggestion. As Sunanda suggested it may be worth a computers versus humans challenge. Given my ignorance of REBOL and Bayes filters, I for one had better stick to the manual tagging team. :-) I'm sure there would be some value in some "intelligent" scripts which can selectively remove "quoted" text from stored messages. When the test is specifically quoted, as you have done, it adds to the readability of the message; when the "quoted" text is simply the original message it actually gets in the way of reading the thread. Any takers? Peter On Saturday, May 15, 2004, at 19:02 Asia/Kuala_Lumpur, Robert M. Münch wrote:

in the least, if they were all sorted out intelligently and all the tag team had to do was confirm or request the classification, then their job would be that much easier. :-) best of both worlds IMHO. -MAx
