Rugby doc project

 [1/10] from: koopmans::itr::ing::nl at: 22-Oct-2001 14:29

Hi all, I may be pushing my luck, but.... I noticed people have questions about Rugby and that the documentation is ready for improvement ;-) However... as the guy who writes is I am automatically disqualified to the docs. Look at the current docs. There is to much 'inside persepective' So my questions are: -What should be in the docs? - Who volunteers or has a short Rugby intro about a certain aspect. I hope some people will at least give me some clues about my own shortcomings regarding the rugby docs. --Maarten

For those of us that are not professional programmers, it would be nice to have a simple, step-by-step example of how to set it up and use it with a very simple sample script (already written and included with the docs). Louis

Hi Marteen, First, let me publicly take the opportunity to thank you for Rugby, I've been experimenting with it for the past few days, it was so easy to port my project to it that I'm still wondering how the hell it works ! Kudos ! Now as for the documentation, I read your post, which made me wonder about what I'll be doing for my own project, which I would like to be a library in which developers could collaborate either by documentation or submission to the library... then I though why not use the excellent Vaniall from Chris Langreiter ? Maybe it's also a suggestion you would consider for Rugby, that way all users could help document Rugby... Best, Chris

I felt the docs (on rebolforces) needed such examples as well. As an example, messaging for instance needs a server-side script and a client script. What would the basics of such scripts look like? Oh yes, and that's not a rugby player on the rebolforces rugby front page. (: They don't wear helmets or shoulderpads. These are what rugby players look like... http://images.google.com/images?q=rugby

Maarten does have simple scripts included in the distribution, but perhaps he should discuss them in the documentation as well. Having said that, I didn't need too much help getting it going :) -- Graham Chiu

Propose a REAL-LIFE little problem and show how Rugby offers its solution. You should write the all the real code and comment it line by line. Examples can be more than one, obiouvsly. Beyond that, you should explain better all (?) the general situations in which Rugby can be useful. Often people search a program because they have a problem and the first thing they want to know is if that program can help them. You should also explain when to use the expose method and when to use the rexec method (if i remember exactly the name). Write a simple "how to start". --- Ciao Romano

That's because you are a real pro, and not a novice like me. :>) I've been following your posts for a long time. If I knew even 1/10 as much about rebol as you know I would be happy. Most of the time I don't even know what you are talking about, but little by little I am learning from you and other pros on this list. Thanks to all of you pros for helping the rest of us. Special thanks also to Maarten and others on this list that have donated some really useful scripts. You guys are great! Louis

Hi Louis, I'm certainly not a pro - just a hobbyist like you.

Just have the advantage of spending a few more years at it than you. I follow the principle of osmosis - and it seems to work with the knowledge on this list seeping into me :) -- Graham Chiu

Hi Marteen,

what about a REBOL code sniplets server+client? You provide the code for both as an example and maybe someone will host the server, later. You can make a special administration client to stop the server, change its setting, make backups remotely,... Lot of comments in the code are a good way to explain. When the sample is submitted ather people can add some details in the comments to avoid that "it's all easy to me" syndrome you mentioned in writing Rugby reblets. Zaijian Mario

Thanks, but... I don't have the resources to host a Wiki like thing for Rugby. I will try to add some of the other features mentioned by others as of the next Rugby release. --Maarten
