Perhaps it's time to ask the developers/users whether they would like to see platform specific enhancements for Rebol ... Anyone want to set up a poll? -- Graham Chiu http://www.compkarori.com/cerebrus

Nice. I think getting the SetLayeredWindowAttributes (windows) API call (earlier posts) would be critical for something like this. TB

I think that the question was partially answered already. We have several levels which break write once run everywhere rule alredy - various Pro and Command features, ability to work with registry (even set as default ;-) ... My opinion is, that rebol is not only a language - it is a platform, it is a principle you use to create software apps. Saying that, we could consider platform specific issues as being just plug-ins ... so, not being able to do something on certain platform means - you don't have the plug-in, or your platform is not able to handle the situations, but: we CAN'T live with the lowest denominator principle forever. What happens when we want to move to mobile devices, which are underpowered? Will we limit desktop OS versions too, just because some cell phone rebol is not able to do some special gfx effects fast enough? You know my opinion for far too long already - one rebol kernel - the lowest denominator - and the rest of functionality - plug-ins, even for native functionality ... -pekr-

I ran across Konfabulator from a link to a recent article on X-Internet/Rich Client GUIs: <http://www.boxesandarrows.com/archives/htmls_time_is_over_lets_move_on.php> The author has set up a mailing list to further the discussion and explore tools/techniques for evolving beyond the current state of browser apps. <http://lists.htmhell.com/listinfo.cgi/webgui-htmhell.com> WRT platform specific capabilities, I think the need is without question. There is a wide gulf between a greenfields lab project and a product that users are willing to accept into their lives, and that developers are willing to shell-out money for. New tools like Konfabulator are cropping up nearly every month. My hope is that RT revises its course by a few degrees, if only enough to convince investors that RT is serious about playing a lead role in a commercial space. Flash MX and others may have rotten foundations, but they are not static: they continue to patch and build at a brisk pace. -- Ed Petr Krenzelok wrote:

There must be a question otherwise RT would be doing it. Perhaps, as I said, we need to set up a poll to see what the depth of feeling is .. and RT can take note of that. -- Graham Chiu http://www.compkarori.com/cerebrus

Hey, thanks for the link. While that article wasn't so interesting (yes, HTML sucks but it's not going away anytime soon - and it shouldn't at this point in time), I did find my way from that site to ftrain.com which has many good ones. One article there (http://ftrain.com/archive_ftraintwo_14.html) even makes a brief mention of REBOL. -Karl
