Revised List and Source

 [1/9] from: Carl:rebol at: 11-Jul-2003 14:03

As you may have noticed, the list web pages have changed slightly. (http://cobalt.reboltech.com/~lister) Added message numbers to allow people to refer to messages by their numbers. Started with #100000 so we can someday add the entire archive back to 1998. (You don't think it's more than 100000 messages, do you? If so, tell me now.) Andrew (and others), the link to the source code can be found at the bottom of the main index page. Rule is: simple, readable. We still need to figure a way for you to post your changes. Any suggestions? -Carl

Is the list software itself written in Rebol? If so, is the source available? Dave Fobare

I wish it was in REBOL, in fact for a few years it was (called SELMA). But, I did not have the time to make needed improvements, and no one else wanted to take it on, so we switched to using Listar. You can find an older version of SELMA in the library. I don't think it has all the improvements we made, but it does work for small groups, and it is easy to deal with. Unfortunately, after more than 300,000 incoming messages (not just postings, but also subscribe, help, etc.) its archive files started to bog down the Linux filesystem. -Carl

Hi all, Concerning the new list, just two comment/question. 1) To be abble to build an index of threads or a three of post in a thread. Is it enough to add to the msgs block a number indicating the message this one reply or zero is this is a new thread ? So the block become [10001 [carl--rebol--com] "Example Message" "3 Jul 2003" "Content here" 0] [10002 [luke--rebol--com] "Another Message" "4 Jul 2003" "Happy Iday" 0] [10003 [boby--rebol--com] "Re : Example Message" "4 Jul 2003" "an answer" 10001] [10004 [luke--rebol--com] "Re : example message" "5 Jul 2003" "Another one" 10001] 2) why do you recreate all the messages pages instead of only the last one (and the one before for the linkage) ? I can understand this at this time, because the page are "under developpment", but at the end ? Didier C. -[DideC]-

Just counted my mail, it looks to be enough. 2001 - now <= ~30000 mails. Is it possible not to set any of the background colours? I've set my preferred colours in my browser already. The code overrides me. Anton.

I was going to ask whether you were going to use 0 or 1 as the start ... :) But how about this message of yours from 2000 which suggests that you need to add another 0 there ... Anyone happen to notice that little Selma REBOL (the script that runs this mailing list) has passed the 250000 incoming messages mark? I think she deserves a party... Good job, Selma! You're The Babe. -Carl And usenet won't give us comp.lang.rebol because there's not enough traffic... bull. They just don't like us REBOLs rock'n the boat." PS: 258000 messages... Gives an entirely new meaning to an ls , if you know what I mean. ;) Has anyone tried to get comp.lang.rebol again?? -- Graham Chiu

Wow, that was three years ago. Maybe we do need to adjust for that. Very impressive that you found it. I want to use that search engine! Also, those 250K were inbound messages, not necessarily outbound (e.g. things like subscribe, help). Only the outbound msgs really need the numbering. Whether we're over 100,000 msgs sounds like a good question for Pekr, who I know keeps close tabs on such things. -Carl
