altme ??

 [1/11] from: tim::johnsons-web::com at: 12-Jun-2003 7:46

Hello Rebols: Well, I've installed ALTME. I think. OS is RH 7.2 But it's pretty clueless. :-) Or is it me that is clueless? Information doesn't give me any clickable links. They're all dead. Anyone have any tips on how to get started with it? thanks -- Tim Johnson <[tim--johnsons-web--com]> http://www.alaska-internet-solutions.com http://www.johnsons-web.com

Tim, The dead information links are probably REBOL/AltME trying to open a URL using netscape. If netscape isn't in your path it won't work. It seems Linux could use a standard way to identify your browser (BROWSER env. variable, etc). I gave AltME a try yesterday (on RH 7.3) but I wasn't able to create my own world. Instead of a small world window showing the number of users I got a copy of the main interface and netstat showed a socket on port 5500 in the TIME_WAIT state. -Karl

I guessed that .... I just tried locating it to usr/local/netscape/netscape Still won't work... And in the meantime, maybe AltMe isn't ready for prime time. Thanks for the input! tim

My netscape binary is at /usr/local/netscpate so I put altme in the same dir, but so far with no results

hmmm! Gentoo Huh? I shouldn't be mentioning this on this list, but I've been thinking about Gentoo lately. How's it work for you? What did it take to install it? And you can answer that one off the list if you are so inclined. Thanks tim -- Tim Johnson <[tim--johnsons-web--com]> http://www.alaska-internet-solutions.com http://www.johnsons-web.com

[volker--dino]:~> set|grep MOZ MOZILLA_HOME=/home/volker/bin/rebol-browser You can point here to the browser you want. Tim Johnson wrote:

Thanks Volker. But I'm going to need some more help here: Environment variable was set as follows: MOZILLA_HOME=/usr/local/netscape/netscape set|grep MOZ ; shows me MOZILLA_HOME=/usr/local/netscape/netscape but when I start altme from /home/tim/bin I am still getting dead links. And messages from Konsole saying You don't seem to have netscape installed. Sorry to seem so dense... regards -- Tim Johnson <[tim--johnsons-web--com]> http://www.alaska-internet-solutions.com http://www.johnsons-web.com

Me too. I have a 0.0.125 to run the world, 0.10.0 as client.

Hmm. no good ideas. guessing. first one needs to say export MOZILLA_HOME=/usr/local/netscape/netscape (note the "export") And settings are local to shell, so i placed in in ~/.xinitrc and restarted xwindows. When i clear MOZILLA_HOME, its starts mozilla. eventually it looks for mozilla instead of netscape by default? my moz is at /usr/local/netscape/netscape . what happens when you start /usr/local/netscape/netscape directly? -Volker

Oops, should be /usr/X11R6/bin/mozilla . paste-error.. i thought if you ln -s /usr/local/netscape/netscape /usr/local/netscape/netscape altme could eventually start it. -Volker

Thanks Volker: Of course-Export. Now altme loads the browser and attempts to read http://www.safeworlds.com/home.html. But times out. Can't ping, gives me 'unknown host'. regards -- Tim Johnson <[tim--johnsons-web--com]> http://www.alaska-internet-solutions.com http://www.johnsons-web.com
