I believe the sequence was ABL/E -> LAVA -> REBOL -jn- Petr Krenzelok wrote:

Hi All, I've just put a whole stack of REBOL memorabillia on the RF site. http://www.rebolforces.com/shoebox/readme.txt http://www.rebolforces.com/shoebox/ Cheers, Allen K

Hi, Allen, I have already been picking through the shoebox. Neat stuff! I accidentally spilled a drop of coffee on one of the docs ... sorry! I was hoping to find the explanation of the change from LAVA to REBOL. I couldn't find it, but I'm sure that someone on the list knows! Thanks for sharing the mementos. --Scott Jones

Just a guess - trademark issues. I've found that legal reasons are responsible for 90% of name changes and stuff, and trademark disputes probably constitute a good 50 or 60% of them.. Cynical Chris

No, - IIRC Carl told us that the name change was suggested to him by few ppl. Lava was too similar to Java .... -pekr-

Before it was called Lava, it was called Mime (IIRC), but not sure of the date--a guru would have to speak on this. (maybe Viscorp days?) | | |^|_____ (________) ankle ...putting you a foot a head... Kolbjørn Barmen wrote:

Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it. - Santayana - -jn- PS: I almost included the oft-quoted "Those who forget Unix are condemned to re-implement it -- badly!" but decided that might be too political! ;-) ------------------------------------------------------------ Programming languages: compact, powerful, simple ... hehe :-) http://www.rebolforces.com/shoebox/1997-02-26/ well, we are "almost" there - we do have compositing engine. But who would write the whole underlying layer? :-) -pekr-

That was my first thought when I heard the name a week or so ago. Lava would sound more like a Java-type technology, which REBOL is "anything but" -- thank goodness! Thanks Petr. --Scott Jones

Maybe it's because there already existed a programming language called LAVA. Some months ago I read a short article about it. It's a modular language; code is a kind of byte code. But I don't now a link for more information. Jean

ABL/E (1988-90) -> MIME (1990-96) -> Lava (1996-97) -> REBOL (1997-2337) ABL/E = Abstraction based language / environment. MIME = Machine independent multimedia environment. Lava = Lava, hot stuff from the earth's core. At 6/18/01 03:06 PM +0200, you wrote:

Cheer up Carl - don't set your sights so short (2337). Lets all aim high and maybe we will land in the middle. (2337+) ahhh that sounds better... Paul Tretter

There was a language called LAVA that was used as a VLSI target language in the 1980s. But I don't know, of course, if this `precluded' use...
