How to find an Internet provider with Rebol CGI capabilities?

Hello, does anybody know where I can find an internet provider (free of charge or not free... but not too much expensive :-) ) to create Rebol CGI and use them to create an internet site? Thank you. -- --Alessandro

I've started up a web hosting service. Free Viewtop rebsites for the REBOL faithful was the original plan, but that has expanded to full fledged programming accounts. It's http://peoplecards.ca. Secure shell Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 accounts, but I've been lazy and these are still rooted off my Dev machine, not the speedy little server boxes. That also means I haven't turned on an X-Window tunnelling on the ssh, so it's limited to terminal sessions and REBOL/Core 1.3.2 and 2.7.5 for interactive programming on the servers. (Well along with all the other Debian GNU/Linux goodies including Digital Mars D compiler 1.010 etc.) peoplecards.ca uses DocKimbel's most awesome Cheyenne web server and I just installed 0.9.16 so it's good to go with RSP and CGI, and I might turn on the PHP handler, but I think it needs some soak time first. Downside...I'm a small, very small, shop. Things keep changing as I learn more and add the bells and whistles, which I do slowly because I'm still not convinced I understand all the ins and outs of the Internet Bugs and Thugs and I'd rather not open a port for a service until I know I can reasonably lock it down. I'm charging $12.95 a month to customers, but REBOL coders get in free. Name wise you'd be http://peoplecards.ca/rebol/pickaname but after a few more tests, I'll be opening up virtual hosts, so http://pickaname.peoplecards.ca/ is an option too. Resource usage wise, we'd need to negotiate, but I'm willing to provide as much as I feasibly can to advance REBOL. Hello, It sounds interesting. What do you use as web server? Apache and cgi mod for rebol? If needed, can I "mount" some extensions? Have you some libraries (extra features)? Which rebol version do you supply? I'm a Rebol developer, and I wish to create a particular game in Rebol. My problem is server-side: I wish to make it in rebol, but I could make it even in java or php. So I need to compare the services. Web server is Cheyenne...All REBOL all the time... :) CGI and RSP are functioning and DocKimbel keeps on extending Cheyenne's capabilities, but it isn't Apache, so off-the-shelf modules are not the way of things here at peoplecards. PHP could be installed as support was just announced, but I haven't yet.

I'm open to all kinds things...accounts on Chester (the redundant server) could be configured to allow a test head server and you could play around to your hearts content. This is a Debian GNU/Linux system, so with the nearly 19,000 preconfigured packages, we are spoilt for choice. I'm willing to work through any options, but that is also part of the downside, you might have to help me to help you to get things set up and running properly.

Right now I'm running peoplecards using Core 2.7.5.4.2, meaning I'm running a beta web server on a beta REBOL/Core but over the last few months everything seems to be working out. Programmer accounts will have any and all versions that I can get hold of.

Again I'll reiterate the downside. I'm a one man shop, there are lot of things I'm not an expert at yet, Given a need, I'm willing to install just about any service if I can get a feeling that I know how to secure it. I'll be honest...I'm still relatively new. There are a a lot of things I haven't done on this end yet...Currently ssh is firewalled to my Dev box, but it is old and tired and if you want to do real CLI work, I'd need to lock down the configuration to get accounts running on the redundant server. That has implications for automatic failover etc etc. In short, I'll try and provide the resources, but things could very well be a little flakey once and a while, as once again, it's a one man show. I've only installed and configured things that I've felt a need for. I'm also pro GNU/Linux and anti (the other PC OS) so if it isn't a Debian service, it doesn't run here. :)

No problem. I'll also offer up an option. When I was living in the near north of Ontario I was admin of a site hosted by http://www.thebigbrain.ca Dan is a reseller of web space from a huge server farm down in Denver somewhere. They were ok with me installing REBOL/Core and the service comes with the full fledged cPanel front end and a jail shell. Not cheap, but not too expensive. Cheers, Brian

My domain hoster - cniweb.net - is very rebol friendly, but not cheap. At least $24 per month, but they will do just about anything (within reason) for you - as opposed to a "server farm". I do know of a couple of ISPs here in Alaska who won't host rebol directly, but they will allow you to install the rebol binary directly into your own domain's cgi-bin. I don't know how safe that is, but it is workable, as rebol is a very simple system to install, compared to perl or python. I'm shortly going to a meeting of local telco sysadmins, I'll ask their opinion of the last method. tim

Hi, I've used http://www.nebularis.com/ for a while and have been very happy with their support, on the few occasions I've needed it. They're also one of the few hosts that are upfront about offering REBOL. (It's on their front page.) As to whether they're in your price range though is a different matter. Prices start at US$7.99 a month and you don't get much space and bandwidth for that, and you'd have to ask them about mounting extensions and the like. -- Carl Read. Hello Brian, I think we can do something together, for at least two reasons: 1) I think that the people that try to make something as independent developers, or making an independent business, etc... should be promoted. 2) I hope I can help you to test the service, to let you supply a better service, etc... Since, at the beginning, I will not need of a big server (I'm creating the game in my free time, and meanwhile, I have a family, an Italian blog site devoted to Rebol, I have my standard job (I'm an analyst/programmer, and system administrator in a big company), etc...), I think your solution could fit my needs. If for you is ok, I wish to get an account for one month, just to check everything (I always used Rebol as standalone system, but I never used to create CGI ), and if it will be right, I can pay a fee to you (because I like the idea to pay someone to help his job). But I cannot pay too much (I'm a "normal" man, not a "rich man"!!), so please, give me a cheap solution. In the future, if my game will be completed, so when I will need of real server power, server resources, we could recheck again the fee to adjust it to the new requirements. Is it good for you? peoplecards.ca and my Iceape browser didn't really display the backspaces very well... :) but I got results fairly consistently around: Console: 0:00:00.017804 - 28434 KC/S Processor: 0:00:00.264081 - 3271 RHz (REBOL-Hertz) Memory: 0:00:01.634351 - 29 MB/S Disk/File: 0:00:00.429209 - 71 MB/S No clue if those are good bad or indifferent. Thanks for doing that. Here's a clue: they look very good compared to the host that runs REBOL.org. Here's my latest for that....Each of the numbers are the *best* result picked from a dozen runs. The worst/average are often lower. Console: 0:00:00.119881 - 4207 KC/S Processor: 0:00:00.697961 - 1237 RHz (REBOL-Hertz) Memory: 0:00:02.318384 - 20 MB/S Disk/File: 0:00:05.510997 - 5 MB/S About the only thing that can't get much slower is the Disk/File number [it'll drop to a sluggish 4MB/S, but I've never seen lower]. *** Somewhere on the DevCon2007 videos is Carl and I agreeing that REBOL.org needs to migrate to a host that has a computer built in the current century. But neither of us are likely to make a move on that for a while. It's a priority, but not a high enough one. Still, it'll be good to know the fastest REBOL host around when we do, so I'd appreciate seeing other people's benchmarks. Sunanda.
