brave souls wanted
[1/14] from: gchiu::compkarori::co::nz at: 6-Nov-2002 10:03
I need some brave souls, as it were, to enter the
underground and test my anti-spam tool 'Cerebrus'. :)
The docs are at
http://www.compkarori.com/cerebrus/index.html
and the dowload urls for the binaries/data file is
documented there.
It's an encapped windows program, and I'm hoping it will
work with any email client.
Thanks,

Graham, count me in. BTW, my primary client is Eudora, so we'll see how it
does with that.
If this does the job, it will make life so much easier for us.

Something that really helped... set up another (5th) computer on my desk
that just sits here with Eudora open all day.

I'll give it a go with my Windows XP machine with Outlook Express email
program. (I'm getting awfully tired of all the Nigerian cons, porn and
viagra spam I've been getting.)

Hi Andrew,
I am getting about 20-40 spam email per day which is pretty distracting.
I've now reduced it to less than 2 per day entering my InBox, and most days
none :)
Cerebrus is pretty strict about the email so you do have to spend some time
creating your whitelists etc. especially for mailing lists as it generally
will flag all bulk mail as spam.
Sometimes it will flag good email as spam, so you do need to cast an eye
over the mailbox that you are going to route the spam mail to. For instance
I got an email today from Gabriele that was flagged as spam as one of the
email servers his ISP uses is listed as a spam source :(

I've been trying it out and it got a spam email in the first try! :)
One little problem: I changed my Outlook Express message rules for [spam?]
to delete the message from the server, and Cerebus didn't understand it.
Outlook Express responded with:
The server responded with an error. Account: 'pop3.xtra.co.nz', Server:
'localhost', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR unsupported command',
Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number:
0x800CCC90
But otherwise, looks good.

Hi Andrew,
That's a Cerebrus generated message sent back to OE. I've only used OE for
a week for testing purposes so am not too familiar with it. I presume that
you have downloaded the message, but you have also left a copy on the
server? And now you want to delete it from the server?
I wonder what command OE sent. Can you check the Cerebrus.log file to see
what it was?
Thanks,

Hi Andrew,
I did some tracing on OE when you set the message rule to delete the message
from the server when the subject line matchs [spam?].
What happens is that OE issues a TOP command for each unread message. That
is, it fetches the message header for each unread message. Now since
Cerebrus has yet to alter the subject line, the rule will always fail. So,
at this time, there is a *disadvantage* in using the "delete from server"
action, unless of course you have other rules that take advantage of header
information.
However, since most of the spam can be spotted from the header, it inspires
me to do a spam check on a TOP command as well so that you will be saved
from downloading the full message when it is spam. However, this means you
will have put a greater trust in Cerebrus than I currently have !!!
I've already implemented the TOP command, and hopefully will get the rest
done in the weekend.

Carl... we are very, very, very, very happy to see you on this
list. :-)
(BTW, I sent a mail to you last month, probably got lost
somewhere. Maybe now is the right time to try to resend? :)
Regards,
Gabriele.

I'll second that!
It makes a huge difference to have any of the RT folks hanging out.
There is something about even a little comment that really helps the
community feel connected to RT. It is a real treat for us to have that
connection with the source of the product.
Thanks, Rod.
