While we are announcing

 [1/11] from: m:koopmans2:chello:nl at: 6-Mar-2002 20:58

Hi All, Within the next few weeks/months I'll be releasing a P2P stack on top of Rugby. Finally Rugby is mature enough for that! Working name: Rebella License: BSD Any View hackers to build a Morpheus on top of that? --Maarten

Hi Maarten, << Working name: Rebella >> Hmmm. Will people think of "Rubella", the disease when they hear that name? Just a thought. --Gregg

Not an answer to your question, just my question (as typical, am I not? :-) - will you share with us capabilities of your stack in comparison to Gnutella technology e.g.? How will be nodes organised, interconnected/clustered, how will searches be propagated, etc? Maybe more ppl could come up with some interesting ideas here? -pekr-

Being Dutch I am not familiar with English names of diseases. Thanks... Talking about P2P another one has crossed my mind though: Rebola - it spreads like a virus Anyway, it is just a working name. Any suggestions? --Maarten

You have a reputation to live up to ;-)

I will put out a release which is Gnutella and/or Freenet like but with all the messages in Rugby. So that it will be high-level and goes through all firewalls, possibly with built-in security. If people on thes ml will react and test, I can then improve nodes sorting etc. as things develop. There is some stuff known about what is wrong in Gnutella net, but as I improve on that we may learn other things. Although choosing Rugby as transport without a doubs is a bit slower than implementing a P2P protocol direct in TCP the power of what you can do then should compensate for that. Once that works I'll release the source code on a seperate website, hopefully with an Encapped version with a GUI for end users. Using built-in encryption of course ;-) I have been planning this and working on it for some time (as you knew, I think). Gabriele pointed me to this direction some time ago, so many thanks to him as well. Be prepared, Maarten --Maarten

If I can permit some suggestions : What about RebOrbchestra - for Rebol Orb Orchestra (or let the second b out if you prefer -like in RebOrchestra) or RebHarmony - as an implicit derivative for the above one or RebShare - for what it permits us to do with or RebPeer - for what it implies ... or RebP2P - also a condensed derivative but not very innovative ! I think ... or RebTransPeer - in English it would mean form a Peer to the other and that doesn't seem so bad to me while in French this sounds like the verb Transpirer which means many things but the next ones which come from the Harrap's dictionary are to me what seems the most appropriate meanings : (a) figurative: (from a secret, or from news etc) to come to light, to come out. And that's it. Just have to choose from the many suggestions done by all the addict readers of this ML. Gerard Cote Copyright © 2000, Harrap's Multimedia, © 2000, Havas Interactive ;-)

Hi Maarten, On Wednesday, March 06, 2002, 8:58:25 PM, you wrote: MK> Any View hackers to build a Morpheus on top of that? I'd like to participate, but with my current free time, I could only if we use a model of open development like the one I proposed for dbms3.r and the REBOL/DEV ml. Hi Gabriele, It would be very good if you'd help, but... what was the development model you propsed for dbms3? I didn't follow the ml in that time. --Maarten
