Why this email list has calmed down...

 [1/8] from: carl::s::rebol::com at: 11-Jun-2003 7:04

If you are familiar with this REBOL email list but have not visited for a while, then you may be wondering what happened to all the messages (60-100 per day). Most of the daily "chit chat" has moved over to the REBOL Altme world. AltME is a persistent, secure messaging application written totally in REBOL. By default, AltME worlds are closed... but if you have an interest in visiting the REBOL World, you can get yourself invited pretty easily. (Note: please don't send an email to me tho, as I'm not likely to see it.) You can find out more about AltME and download it from www.altme.com. It's still in beta, but works fairly well. See you on the REBOL SafeWorld... -Carl Sassenrath

So how can I easily be invited? Nice little REBOL app, but you have to know the world name, a username and a password to get in. That's great for private meetings, but for a support list for a language? Arent there any OPEN worlds? Even Genesis (the demo world) requires a username and Password. Anyway, if the REBOL discussions are mostly moving there, I suggest you make it easy to gain entry. Thanks, John

Hello,

1) Can some of you invite me in the REBOL discussion world? Marc Meurrens <[marc--meurrens--org]> (Prof. Computer Sciences, http://www.ulb.ac.be/ URL: http://www.meurrens.org/ member of the http://www.acm.org/ ) 2) If there is a world on discussing AltMe issues, please invite me too... Coordinates above. 3) There is missing feature (this is a suggestion...) in AltMe: Some worlds would be able, if they decide so (!!!), to publish their existence (just the world's name on a list on www.safeworlds.com ). Then it would be possible for anybody to send a "special" message to the Master of such world (or to the person or the group configured for this purpose, it may of course be the group All it self, ...). This "special" message is limited to providing a) a name (say max 50 chars) b) an email c) an URL (generally the home page of the sender) d) a very short message (say max 80 chars) This could preserve the "intimity" (specially if the message goes to a devoted user) of the world but still provide an opportunity to recruite new members. 4) If some of you as an experience on installing AltMe on a Linux Box (RH), please contact me out of list. Thanks.

Hi Marc, On Wednesday, June 11, 2003, 8:51:58 AM, you wrote: MM> 1) Can some of you invite me in the REBOL discussion world? You just need to log in as guest / guest, and the ask in the Accounts group for an account (stating your email address). A world master will eventually notice it and create an account for you. Defaul ports, opened in companies, are mainly 80 - web access ... AltME would have to utilize http tunneling as IOS does to work even from behind of firewall ... feature requested long time ago, but SafeWorlds has provided us with any decision ... -pekr-

Hi John, JP> So how can I easily be invited? As Gabriele said, just show up, log in with guest/guest, and post a message to the Accounts group. (Please use real names instead of handles for your user name) JP> Nice little REBOL app, but you have to know the world name, a username JP> and a password to get in. JP> That's great for private meetings, but for a support list for a language? I don't think Carl meant that it's becoming an official suppotr mechanism in any way, but that the REBOL community is still very active; just somewhere else. JP> Arent there any OPEN worlds? Even Genesis (the demo world) requires a JP> username and Password. SafeWorlds is meant for private groups, though you could certainly make your own world as open as you want. It's not meant for anonymous postings by anyone who might stop by. JP> Anyway, if the REBOL discussions are mostly moving there, I suggest you JP> make it easy to gain entry. REBOL discussions are everywhere, and there is no perfect mechanism for all needs. I'd bet this list is still the universal connection point, but those on Linus or Windows can use the AltME REBOL world. Some folks are also on other private AltMe worlds and IOS servers. There are different rules for different places, and a different "feel" for each. --Gregg -- Gregg
