Skins?

 [1/2] from: robert:muench:robertmuench at: 29-Sep-2001 14:54

Hi, today I surfed around at the REB and found the different skins from DocKimbel and Etienne. Very cool stuff of course! Anyway, the most thing I hear when showing Rebol is: Well nice, but it's not XYZ style and doens't run inside a browser. The first thing seems to be solveable, yet! I have some suggestions & questions about skins: 1. How much ressources does a new skin needs? Are there are any numbers concering memory, run-time etc.? 2. Is there a standard way for creating skins? Anyone thought about a skin creator? IMO it would be nice to have a how-to about skin makeing. 3. I haven't used any of the available skins yet, but it seems not to be to hard. Did others use these skins already? What's your experience? 4. Does RT plan to support skins as build-in feature? Robert

Any suggestion is welcome :-)

I never made tests about memory needs. But if you want to use images, consider to use the smallest to limit the memory use. It's common sense.

The standard way is the way explained in the Rebol/View docs with stylesheets : define your own standard stylesheets and customize its like explained in the docs. About a skin creator, the best way, I think, is to customize and make more powerful the "effect lab" you can find in the REBOL.com Demos. You can find an how-to about skin making in the Rebol/View docs with stylesheets. If these docs are not sufficient, have a look to WinSkins from DocKimbel or my skins demo in my reb sit ("Etienne" reb site).

I would like to have feed-back too ...

What I can say is that RT is very interested about DocKimbel's skins, and mine. Wait and see ;-) Perhaps good surprises soon ...
