[ALLY] View 1.1 Beta 1

 [1/16] from: carl::rebol::com at: 14-Apr-2001 19:58

If you are interested and have some time over the next 36 hours, you can try REBOL/View 1.1 Beta 1. This release includes the View Desktop and access to the mighty world wide reb, WWR. But to use it, you have to pass this test first: REBOL [] write/binary/allow %view.exe decompress read/binary http://www.rebol.com/downloads/view11b1.rz [read write execute] This beta is available only for Windows at this time. This is not an open beta. There is no link on our site. It can only be obtained thru the above script. We will be releasing 1.1 on Monday... including many other platforms. I hope you can live with the colors of the desktop. Skins will not be available until 1.2. We'll be working on the docs tomorrow. Peek at some of the files in your view/desktop installation directory: such as bookmarks.r, services.r, filetypes.r, and history.r. Look at the index.r files in the public tree. Notice that index files require a script header that includes Type: 'index. Problems with this 1.1 beta should be reported to feedback, but if you find a really serious problem, please post it to this list as well. REBOLing along, -Carl

I should note... rebolforces is not up on the new reb yet. I put that there to encourage Allen. But, perhaps should remove it until ready... -Carl At 4/15/01 03:36 PM +1200, you wrote:

bright green color together with grid is VERY nice. ... although some dialog boxes bear "default" brown rebol coloring ...

Although my problem is not serious, asking here because others could be interested too - what is /sound subfolder good for? Will we get basic sound abilities anytime soon? Maybe just two things: 1) I turned on debugging, so once I start View console window is started too and I can see debug info in it. So I invoked debug icon once again and selected 'no ... but once I start View once again, debugging to console is still there. Ah, now I found debug field in preference file - shout be turnable in thru 'user configuration dialog imo. 2) I asked already during Express testing and I still can't understand it. I want my View to start in maximised mode. So I maximised my window, closed View and started it once again. But I can see still the same - very annoying - X axis offset. How can I turn it off? (because the only thing I do once View starts is - I maximize my window once again). I also tried to change off-set field in my preference file from 0x19 to 0x0, but it does not seem to be reflected. But anyway - special option should be provided for Windows View, to allow maximised window appearance, not just calculated available desktop size out from screen-size ... Just my 2 cups of tea in the morning :-) -pekr-

Hi Carl, That is certainly a powerful motivation for Allen! A question for you. I'm looking at whipping up a Rebsite and found the make-index.r tool which is great. But, How do I test the rebsite locally? The GOTO dialog appears to take only URL! I also tried running webserver.r and typing in http://localhost... etc which got me the index.r read so I see icons on the desktop top, but soon as I click on a WWW icon the browser is launched with a file specification not a http://localhost target. So I'm caught between a rock and hard place :) Or is there another way out (aside from hacking cache entries). Brett.

Did you put it in the "Sites" folder? I continue to view REBOL's and Jeff's Rebsites only :-( BTW, now Jeff's rebsite works correctly (see feedback #6026). -- Paolo Russo [pa--russo--perd--com] _________________ PERD s.r.l. Virtual Technologies for Real Solutions http://www.perd.com

Looks nice. I feel like I bought /View/Pro to soon. Anyway to keep the console window from appearing when the desktop is turned on. Paul Tretter

What do you mean, too soon? There is no charge to upgrade at this time. Your /Pro key works for this too. The console window should not appear. If it does, you may have debug output turned on... or something else perhaps? -Carl At 4/14/01 10:14 PM -0500, you wrote:

Not sure if this is a bug. But if you: -click on demos icon -right click on any application (that hasn't been loaded) -click edit you get an error such as: Cannot read file: /c/windows/desktop/rebol/beta/view/public/www.rebol.com/view/demos/mines.r I guess this is more of an reblet error rather than a desktop error. Btw, I like the new text editor! rishi --- Carl Sassenrath <[carl--rebol--com]> wrote:

Your right Carl I did have debug on. As for the news about /Pro, that is very good news. I am really looking forward to this already. Paul Tretter

Looks like there has been some attrition of the wwr with only rebol and rebolforces surviving, and the latter gives an open error! -- Graham Chiu

Have you tried to run the demo first? it accesses the file in the cache. before it was the other way around (allways net). so one could read it before getting trapped, but not edit offline. they fix it to use read-thru i hope :)

Yes, this will be fixed before Monday's release.

Well I may have an answer to my own question. I created a bookmark for my local site. Some more questions for View 1.1 1) Are scrolling faces included yet - I couldn't find any evidence? 2) The text length limit for the desktop icons is quite constraining. Can it be made longer or arbitrary? The existing text size results in lots of time trying to work out a name. 3) Like Larry, the new security scheme has caused my user.r custom scripts to pop up security messages (they live in an area I back up as opposed to program files that is shared by /Core as well). Is there some way of adding a custom "trusted area" / sandbox extension.? Regarding beta - I haven't seen anything really ugly yet. Regards Brett.

It's on the way, I'm slowly converting scripts across. www.rebolforces.com/index.r Cheers, Allen K

It would have had an open error because I moved all the previous beta scripts into another directory while I convert them. But you can see some of the converted ones now at http://www.rebolforces.com/index.r Right click on the desktop every now and then when looking at the RF reb to see my progress. :-) Cheers, Allen K

Hi Carl, hi the list - i have no View installed, just core, so after C>rebol view_download.r (with your code below) from a command line it does nothing, just "connecting to rebol.com" until i kill the shell. ( i tried "do http://www.sievertsen.de/REBOL/paint.r, " for example, it's working; i'm using the modem to ISP with dynamic IP-s on NT4.0 Thankfully Sascha. Carl Sassenrath schrieb:
