Docbase, Rebol Applications and central repository

 [1/7] from: gchillemi:aliceposta:it at: 18-Feb-2008 21:38

Hello, do you remember Aminet ? For non Amiga Fans was a central repository of program and utilities. Every programmer knew that every new version of his software had to be published on aminet to gain popilarity and visibility. It is over a month I am working on REBOL_2 Docbase Projects page navigating like a crazy through the net searching for Rebol applications and each week/day I find new ones (http://www.rebol.net/wiki/R2_projects). It would be nice if we have a central repository for applications like Aminet was for the amiga. Is Rebol.org only for small scripts ? What you think about my difficulties ? Have you had the same ? In my case, I only search rebol.org for scripts if I'm looking for a specifically REBOL-related program. Whereas if I'm looking for a program that does such-and-such, I'll normally Google for it, (or look in Tucows or similar), with the odds of that method turning up a REBOL program being pretty slim. I'm not sure a central repository of REBOL programs would change this behaviour, as Google's good for finding popular programs quickly, with 'popular' usually meaning there's plenty of online comments about them to give you some idea of how good or otherwise they are. What about others? If looking for a program that does X, how do you go about finding it? -- Carl Read. On Monday, 18-February-2008 at 21:38:25 Giuseppe Chillemi wrote,

same here, and google is pretty good at finding answers for any rebol question I have so far, too. obviously, some times, you do not know the exact words for your problem, which means you can't search for it effectively... but its still usefull in most cases. -MAx On Feb 19, 2008 12:10 AM, Carl Read <carl-cybercraft.co.nz> wrote:

Carl, a central collection point will be: A central repository for every new release of software A complete index to search for projects A software news source which everyone will give a constant look. Imagine having every week in the mailing list a news like ___________________________________________________ NicomDB01.zip DB/Engine New DB Engie for the REBOLers. RebXML10.zip UTIL/XML XML Converter MakeDOC4.zip UTIL/TEXT New version of makedoc ___________________________________________________ Personally I would end searching everywhere for news and every author could have instant visibility of his project. Aminet worked in that way and it contributed a lot on the success of many amiga projects and the amiga itself Giuseppe Chillemi

Giuseppe, rebol.org already has such stuff automated, maybe sunanda would like to add a news page, or some sort of active projects links, page, which you could maintain... he could even provide an rss feed, which is usually quite easy to setup. the rebol week, although once pretty active, is now underused, for a variety of reasons, one of them being that many of its members are very busy, sick, or recovering... you might want to speak to graham in order to be our current "active" maintainer. the complexity in having a central repository, is that people want control over their files, their image and stuff. Its often hard/tedious/impractical to host our stuff elsewhere. sometimes the release structure is complex enough to make it quite a job. its my honest belief that what you want to build is in fact an extension or improvement over what/how rebol.org manages what it does. Sunanada seems to be a little less "active" these days (at least publicly) maybe you could contact him privately and offer help on the management of rebol.org. I doubt he will reply by a flat no, especially if you really are willing to put effort and time in it... and by your continued rebdoc2 efforts as of late, I think you've proved out of any doubt that you have. on top of it, if you where able to help him, we'd all continue to have a single repository. does this all make sense? -MAx On Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 10:45 AM, Giuseppe Chillemi <gchillemi-aliceposta.it> wrote:

I have read my mind ! I have been thinking about REBOL.ORG too.

I don't know how is the engine behind rebol.org but it seems we only need a way to upload ZIP files other then scripts and a link to the homepage of the project.

I agree with you and already asked sunanda which accepted me to the library team. Thank you Maxim ! Giuseppe Chillemi
