Replying to myself on this one. Here's an alternative solution that I just tested.
Download the free for personal use and not for spamming postcast smtp server at
http://www.postcastserver.com/
Install it etc.
Now, set your smtp server to your local pc's ip address if you're on a network. I don't
have dial up at present so not sure what to use there. Note that localhost and 127.0.0.1
did not work for me.
Eg: if your pc has IP address of 192.168.1.25, then
set-net [ [erhawkins--verizon--net] 192.168.1.25 incoming.verizon.net ]
should work.
