Carl, a central collection point will be:
A central repository for every new release of software
A complete index to search for projects
A software news source which everyone will give a constant look.
Imagine having every week in the mailing list a news like

Personally I would end searching everywhere for news and every author could
have instant visibility of his project.
Aminet worked in that way and it contributed a lot on the success of many
amiga projects and the amiga itself
