[REBOL] Virus Warning
From: holger::rebol::net at: 19-Apr-2002 12:22
During the last 24 hours we have received over twenty copies of a new virus,
which is propagating through email. Some of those copies were also directed to
the REBOL list, but filtered out and thus not sent to list subscribers.
In one case the virus was sent by a person who is subscribed to the list, and
was therefore not filtered out, but forwarded to the list and sent to
subscribers. I was able to interrupt the delivery of that virus in time to
prevent it from reaching most subscribers. However a few subscribers probably
did receive the virus, with a subject line containing the words "japanese" and
. We apologize for that, and are doing everything we can to prevent
that kind of thing from happening again.
If you do receive a suspicious email from this list, please DO NOT open it, in
particular if the mail is unusually large (2000 lines or more) or looks like it
contains attachments. Legitimate mail arriving from the list NEVER contains
attachments. If mail arriving at your site from the list does appear to
contain an attachment, then the mail is almost certainly "hacked" in some way
Please DO NOT forward ANY emails you receive from this list to anti-virus
organizations, spam-cop organizations etc. Doing so only causes a lot of
administrative work for us, because those organizations usually contact us for
mail routing information, which means we need to weed through mail logs etc.
Any spam or viruses we receive, regardless of whether it appears on the list or
not, is already being reported to the proper organizations, by us.
We will continue to monitor the situation and try to prevent any spam and
viruses we receive from getting forwarded to subscribers.
There is one thing every subscriber running MS-Windows should do though: please
install anti-virus software on the computer you are running your email client
on, and if you have already done so, ensure that you are using the latest
version of both the anti-virus software and the virus data file that comes with
it. That way you can ensure that your machine at least does not participate in
spreading the virus further. Blocking viruses which we receive from list
subscribers is much more difficult for us than blocking anything we receive
from non-subscribers, and because of that we reserve the right to unsubscribe
and ban subscribers who engage in spreading or forwarding viruses.
Thank you for your cooperation.
