Joel, a nice start.
I agree with the "let's start small" idea. The simpler the better. Even a
few simple comparisons can get the ball rolling and allow the list to grow
from there. The community will be more involved if it's easy to understand
and follow the descriptions, rules, and conclusions.
For instance, we may not want to start with the Ackermann example. Not a
lot of programmers (and especially beginners) are aware or even interested
in what that benchmark indicates. It's not meaningful to them because they
don't relate to it in common programming use. In fact, if it's listed
first, it may scare them away before they see the simpler examples...
because they may conclude that the comparison examples are too academic and
abstract.
